T'will be my first response when I get the call. If they try and convince me a refurb is all they can offer again that is.

Sweet, rang them back about the wrong power cable and wrong game they sent me, so they are sending out GOW and a new cable. Pretty happy with that.

Update: Sending me a brand new xbox + wireless controller. About ****ing time! Another 20minute phone call today after I never received a call from the supervisor I was speaking to on thursday. Terrible, terrible customer support, but its sorted now.

Good info lads should come in handy for me soon.

I got Error E71 after a few freezes/reboots on Saturday (one red light).
Left it off for a while and it was working fine then.

Today playing COD 4 MP it froze and when I rebooted I got 3 RRoD, happened a few times.

Again it's working after I left it off for a while but I'm wondering should I send it back now as I'd say it will inevitably RRoD again soon enough. It'd probably be fine if they booted it up and just send it back.

I bought it on launch day and never had any problems with it apart from some 'Unplayable Disc' which was solved by opening/closing tray.

I just registered console on xbox.com and it says it's outta warranty on 12/28/2006 6:59:59 PM??? I presume this doesn't count for RRoD?

Bad time to break with GTA4 coming soon :(

God Damnit!!!!. does anybody know how long my xbox 360 will be in repair?. i sent it away 18 days ago and i haven't been able to play it for 24 days AAAAGGHHHH!!! withdrawals!!. i dont know what RROD is, but if that's part of the three red lights and my console freezin then that's what I had:(. please someone tell me how much longer i'll have to wait

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,228 ✭✭✭Keith186

He told me it normally takes 2/3 weeks until you get it back.

I'm still waiting on the email from them with the labels which the guy said is 'obviously faster' than getting them snail mailed. We'll wait and see. I'm gonna call tomorrow anyway and say I just renewed xbox live and I can't use it now, try get a free month of it anyway or new joypad would be great.

I sent mine off and it took 10 days from the day i sent it off til i got it returned (with a new mother board as well a new DVD drive so solve the RROD). got it returned, turned it on n asked me to choose update. all was well, was playing my first game and within 5 minutes i got the 3 red rings AGAIN! so rang up xbox support, they gave me the usual story, send it off for repair this time it wil b quicker. told them i doubt they cud get it back to me in less than 10 days in fairness considering it has to be shipped to Germany.

anyway told them i wanted a new console seen as they obviously didnt do much of a ''repair'' on it last time....so they went off and spoke to the supervisor, told me they would ring me back within 72 hours to let me know if they can issue me with a new one?
couldnt of come at a worse time with GTA IV out next week!!:(

I got the UPS label online and packed up the xbox in an a box which ended up being an old xbox 1 box as they don't send the return shipping crate out. dropped it off at UPS in finglas yesterday and according to the tracking number its still sitting there.

Mine got picked up yesterday too and I think its still sitting there too. Status is 'Pick Up'. Thought it'd be nearly there (Germany) by now.

Keep an eye out here too when it gets to stage 3 we shouldn't have too long to wait.

My UPS status finally changed today to In Transit after two days of sitting in UPS, if yours has gone too Keith186 I'd say they probably keep them until they have a batch of them to send back.

Aaarrggghh my 360 just bricked it too...

Almost 2 years old and then yesterday screen froze while playing pro evo. Have had screen freezes before but this time there were fuzzy lines across the screen. Think this might be linked to gpu failure from reading this forum?

Anyway tried to play again today and after 10 mins same thing happened. Then, after rebooting and configuring the network settings on my xbox, it shuts down and RROD appear for first time..

Problem is now though that the console is powering on and loading up fine but keeps freezing after several minutes or seconds (varies). No RROD, which leads me to believe that microsoft will not accept it as a RROD return :|

Will have to ring them tomorrow, this is mostly a vent but if there's any advice id love to hear lol

There is a three year warranty on RRoD cases, so if all else fails, pick up the console, shake vigourously and presto! Three red rings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Furp

Will my 360 UPS status magically changed on Friday from exception in Dublin to in Transit and then delivery in Germany where it arrived at 9.30am.Of course the service.xbox.com page still say they are waiting to receive it.

the cheeese I would not worry about not getting ti repaired for free min will boot up first time but shut it down and reboot and it RROD's over and over again.

Having said that I will wait and see what happens with mine.

Yeah I kept trying to play it possibly in the hope of burning it out to get red ring again :o and found this was the case. Can't even imagine the stress people that have sent these back several times are going through, I'm bloody pissed off at them already and I have yet to experience their customer service lol

    wish me luck

lol, I can't believe this. I just turned on my 360 to test it before GTA tomorrow, you know just in case by some freaky unbelievable bad luck it got RROD. And guess what?

    RROD!!

It was working perfectly yesterday and I've never had so much as a single freeze before tonight.

Right now all I can do is laugh but I'm going to be so pissed in the morning when GTA IV arrives and I've nothing to play it on.

I don't think I can wait the 2 weeks/several months/whatever that it take MS to fix these things. Is it worth trying the towel trick?

I thinking of maybe picking up a new 360 tomorrow and trading in/selling the current one when it comes back from repair (if I can stop myself from smashing it to bits). Or maybe this is perfect excuse to get a PS3.

    *sigh*

Turned my console on after not using it for a while and RROD last week. Not under warranty (firmware reasons!) so tried to fix it myself but it didn't go too well :D

Anyway went down and bought an Xbox 360 Arcade version today for 199 and made sure it had the 175watt for the falcon chip on the box which it did so hopefully reduced risk of RROD now!

How do you know when your three yr warranty is up for the RROD?

I bought mine Christmas a year ago...so it will be two years old this Christmas and it says my warranty is up in a few months on xbox.com

How do they know the warranty when I have the receipt to show otherwise? Are they taking the piss out of me?

The warranty that is shown on the site is the general one-year one. The RROD one is the specific, three year long warranty. Give them a call and when you tell them its the RRoD they will do it all free like. I'm pretty sure its impossible for any 360 to be out of Red Ring warranty in any case: was only released in November 2005 (?) so isn't three years old yet.

My warranty was wrong when I bought my XBOX and had to e-mail them a scan of my receipt for them to update it.

Yeah I did the same yesterday. Just waiting on the UPS labels to send the old one off for repair.

The warranty on my first 360 was all messed up as well. Although I only managed to register it recently as the site didn't accepted the serial number when I bought it. Now it says it's been out of warranty since October 2007. I only bought it in the June.

Just got an email from service.xbox.com and by Original Xbox is on the way back after being repaired. The ups tracking number is not active yet though.

Strange it only changed yesterday from waiting for device which according to UPS they had on Friday to Received. Now it says that its back in warranty and on the way back to me.

So thats 6 Business days since I dropped it off at UPS. seems longer.

He probably is talking about the towel trick, wherby you wrap the 360 in towels run it for 15 minutes in a warm room then let it cool down.

What this does is melt the solder connections inside the console therby reconnected any connections which have cracked or not making good contact, as the connections are supposed to be the source of the RROD as the original heat transfer design of the 360 is not supposed to be adequate.

    See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avWs4-wD15w
    or
    http://thexboxdomain.com/2007/01/15/the-towel-trick-fixes-360s/

BTW the status of my 360 is still Delivered back to customer but UPS tracking still shows the it as billing received only, so its still at the service centre.

Used to work in a game shop. I had arms like a shotputter from carrying RROD'ed Xboxes down the damn stairs. That said, at least with the 360, you can save your hard drive. We had a high failure rate on our PS3's too, but with those we had to swap out the whole machine so you lost all your stuff. By the time I left for greener pastures, we had more PS3 returns than 360, although I'd imagine the launch-niggles have been largely sorted by now.

I fixed a RROd'd console there at the weekend. I bought it with RROD to see if i could. If anybody has one thats out of warranty ( for what ever reason:) ) xbox with rrod send me a pm.

Even if you tried something yourself and it didnt work it might still be fixable. The one i bought someone had attempted to fix it too, and i still got it going!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,799 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

easy fix if you can get it open just unplug the fans from the motherboard leave it overheat, you'll get the 2 left hand lights flashing red leave it for 2 minutes leave it coold down and you should be back in action, I would not recommend the towel trick as you damage other components on the main board by doing this by unplugging the fan it just means the GPU (this is the main culprit) and CPU will overheat. I've been doing this for the last couple of months and it works but mine seems to fail after a couple of weeks off, I would also recommend that if you can stand the console up on its side, the overheat trick seems to work for longer.

So I sent mine away Monday two weeks ago. It took until the Wednesday to get to Germany, and thursday to to get to the factory. On Xbox.com, the repair status was "Waiting for device at warranty centre" for another six days. On Wednesday last week it went to "Device being repaired" and then to "Device shipped to customer" within a few hours. Got an email saying it shall be not longer than seven days. Today was day seven: no xbox.
    UPS says:
"Location Date Local Time Description FRANKFURT,
DE 02/05/2008 21:10 EXPORT SCAN 02/05/2008 20:56 ORIGIN SCAN DE 01/05/2008 23:13 BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED
Tracking results provided by UPS: 06/05/2008 16:13 ET "
so according to this it hasn't been scanned into Ireland yet which means it probably won't be here tomorrow, Day eight.
16 days since it left my house.
23 days since I contacted Microsoft.
30+ days since it inexplicably broke down through zero fault of my own.
4 years since I began my longing for GTA4 and the wait agonisingly continues. I am going to murder someone if my xbox doesn't come tomorrow. Give GTA a bit more publicity at least.

as explained below overheating your xbox can fix dodgy solder points and get everything working again (you can do this via the towel trick or with a hot air gun), its not a permanant fix however which leads onto your next question

the rrod will come back, when that happens itll be a proper fix im gonna do, not overheating to fix points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,318 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

I presume your talking about the xclamp repair, or some variation of it?

It doesnt always work (as i found out first hand). And there is also some things that you need to be careful about. If your not very careful its quite likely you'll bend the metal casing when your drilling through it. If you do bend it the contacts at the bottom of the board will be toucing the metal housing, which will cause a short. (Likely cause of RROD with no fan or dvd drive activity)

There is a few things that you probably already know about but probably worth mentioning all the same.

There is a mod to make your cooling fan 12v, which increases teh amount of air it pushes out, there is also another trick where you put extra card on the fan shrowd(grey plastic thing on fans) thats ment to help too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,799 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

you don't have to drill the case if you follow Rdawg's version of the fix I've used it, problem is its not guarenteed to fix the 3ROD, I constantly have to open mine up and plug out the fans to overheight the GPU, the issue stems from the lead free solder and the poor heat sink, only proper solution would be to re-ball the gpu, not sure of anyone in Ireland who can do that at a reasonable price, and if you weigh up the price of an arcade at €200 it doesn't make much financial sense if it costs over €100 to get the re-work done on it.
I might stick with mine until the next rev of the 360 comes out where the will shrink the GPU die down, which should help with the gpu running hot, they should seriously look at sticking a ZIF socket on the board as this would help the issue and redesing the airflow system in the box, I've done die with a cornflakes box to redirect the airflow over the GPU heatsink, the air coming out of the back that I redirected over the GPU is now nice and hot which means that the air flow design was crappy before.
The joys of owning a launch 360 :)

    Super long post coming up

The one i had must have been repaired a good few times before i got it I'd say.

I opened it up to find they had already tried the xclamp method(not through the case, Rdawgs method probably). I completely re-did it (Rdawgs again), with new thermal paste and everyting else. Overheated just the GPU for 15mins.

Turned it on and it worked.
    Reassembled it and it worked.
Went to show my GF how i fixed it... FAIL!!

So re-attempted everything again a few times... nothing
Tried the through the case method , had the above problem i described above (RROD with no fan activity). At this stage i didnt know that the points at the bottom were touching the case. Was sure i had completely ****ed it. Solution came to me 5-6 days later while i was 100 miles from the xbox! I had read that it was quite common to bend the case when drilling through it and i had obviously did!
After unsuccesfully trying to unbend it, i lined the metal case with cardboard (weetabix box FTW!:p)

So i reasembled tried it out, nothing.
Cooked it twice (on seperate occasions) by plugging the fan out to let it overheat. Still nothing.

Not for the first time i had completely written off this console!

Came accross a crazy method to attempt to fix it. Basically its preform the Rdawg method... then put the xbox mobo in a preheated oven at 200oC for 7-8 mins , then turn it up to 230oC for another 7-8 mins!!!

If your going to try this there is a few things to note:
    1. This obviously risky and mildly stupid!!
    2. Capicators tend to expand/explode when exposed to high temps. You can minimize the risk of this by wrapping each of the bigger caps in tin foil
    3. This is a last throw of dice method,
    4. You need to have the xclamp done for it to be effective.
    5. Your oven will smell a little bit like you cooked a xbox in it!
    6. Your best off desoldering the eject and sync button (the blue plastic of mine are completely melted!)

The mobo was piping hot when i took it out, took nearly an hour for it to cool to what i thought was an acceptable level to try turn it on.

Turned it on and what do you know it worked!

Which brought me to my next problem, the sync button! I could get around the eject button because i got the media remote with the HD-DVD add on. So i soldered 2 wires to the bottom of the mobo where the sync button is.
When i was reasembling the case I ran the wires out through the memory card slot. So to connect up a wireless controller i have to hot wire it!(But it does actually work!)

So its currrently working away, dont know for how long though. At least I had fun with my 360 before i ever played a game on it!

then put the xbox mobo in a preheated oven at 200oC for 7-8 mins , then turn it up to 230oC for another 7-8 mins!!!

I find its served best with sauted dreamcast and some lightly stirfried Wii-motes, makes for a fantastic meal for two.
