harddrives and optical drives will always work.
same with monitor's and speaker sets.

    are you keeping the case?
power supplies are also some what universal.
and thats an exceptionally good power supply.

    as for the main products.
the motherboard is great. ive ordered one myself but cancelled it until after xmas. cant decide what to build.

the core 2 duo will work great on that board. would you concider sticking 60 euro more in and getting a core 2 quad? the q6600 isnt that much more expensive.

    as for the ram.
your old computer has this :512 MB (DDR SDRAM)
the new motherboard wont support sdram. its a very old format.

    your motherboard will only take
    Supported RAM Speed PC2-6400, PC2-5300, PC2-9600, PC2-8500

the ram you picked there to buy is PC2-6400
so yeah it will work fine.

    shipping from hardwareversand.de
its a german website. so its being shipped from germany.
30 euro per item is a lot, but the items are cheaper than buying from irish sites.

    www.komplett.ie
    www.elara.ie
    www.dabs.ie
    www.overclockers.co.uk
    www.scan.co.uk
    www.ebuyers.com

you could buy from irish sites, get it shipped faster, but it costs more. but its not going to be 30 euro per item.

thanks that response was very helpful. and yeah i think i will keep my case ,but if a bargain comes around ,well....

just thinking now..( will my case have any issues with size of parts like the mobo etc..and is each case different, by which i mean how will the output ports on the mobo match up with the cases' ports?

I might get the RAM from somewhere else? dont know yet. Can they bundle the PSU with the ram to save 30 Euro?

    Look, just do this properly.

Forget about using parts from your old machine, put some money down and do it properly.

There is nothing worth while left in your old pc, leave alone and use it as a spare crash machine, file server, test Linux box/whatever.

    Buy a new case.

If you are on a tight budget: Antec sonata 3 case, comes with a 500W quality Antec PSU
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=338137

    For €130.

This is cheaper than getting a cheap and nasty case with a cheap and nasty PSU separately.

EDIT: And yes 500W is more than enough in a psu for what you want to run.

Buy once buy right and stop trying to skimp on critical parts;).
(This will always come back to kick you straight in the sack)

i intend on updating these parts in the future but right now im on a tight budget and these cost savings are helping me get the best mobo and processor in my price range.

If i go for the sli with 2 8800gt's can this psu support it? if theres a link to sli power supply reference would be much appreciated

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

there is no point in going sli on a budget. its pointless.

for double the price fo the 8800gt you only get 28 - 30% performance increasre and thats not on every game around.

you would be best to get one ( which is still going to be a great card! ) and put the money into a new case.

Unless you have a 24" monitor, forget about SLI.

It only makes a difference at extreme resolutions.

Waste of money unless you have a huge screen.

Get a good case, more important you have a good case with good airflow.

    You need:

Half dacent cpu and gfx card. they don't have to be the most expensive parts going. These will be the first parts you replacing regardless as faster parts will come out and the older stuff will fall in price. So buy mid range parts that give you the best bang for the buck.

DO NOT skimp on case, psu, motherboard or ram. These are the parts you will have to put up with for a long time.

    case:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=341701
    €70

    motherboard:

    €143

    ram: 4gb
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=343070
    €122

    graphics card:

    €250

    power supply:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=313804
    €98

    processor:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=338082
    €172

    dvd:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=341853
    €37.50

    harddrive:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=331024
    €95

    total:
    988

not a bad build for 1,000!

it leaves you options to upgrade to sli if you want to in the future.
it leaves you the option of getting quad core in the future if you want to.
and plenty of expansion room in the case and with the motherboard.
overclocking would be pretty good as its a solid motherboard and great ram.

what the graphic card? believe me the graphic card is perfect for me, i know its nvidia, played one at the weekend...., i'll be going crossfire when its totally required.Right now i want the best 'I' can buy and thats the gt. I compare my old card to this like the change from the dark ages to the renaissance. its that drastic. If anyone wants to throw me a few quid you know where to reach me, im VERY much in debt...oh well
    !!!!!!!!!!Roll on 2008!!!!!!!!!!!

    you wont need to sli.

the 8800gt will be more than enough.
getting 2 of them will only give you 15 - 20% increase.

at the moment, its pointless. the 8800gt will handle almost everything apart from crysis on max settings.

so in a couple of months, maybe august, the new crysis killing gpu's will be out. then buy 1 of them. and forget sli.

Havok posted this in bargain alerts....

    http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4TZ4&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=8800gts&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0

    15% faster than a 8800gt for 8800gt price (€265)

Grab one before there gone, exceptional card :p

Liking the mobo, but personally I think the P35 is the better all rounder for overclocking,price/performance,I'd vote that if you want single-card setups....

30 euro per item if you order from german sites.

thats why i said order from the likes of komplett and it would be 30 all together.

Its not €30 per item its €30 delivery for 7 or 8 items,€40 for more than 8 items depending on weight....

Komplett is €12 postage, sometimes more depending on weight....

Dabs €5 for stuff under €40 and €13 for stuff over €50 depending on weight...

Komplett is in no way cheaper,it might be cheaper if your getting a €40 8400gs,but when your spending a grand or more, komplett will rip you off big time....

Most german sites are 20/30euro altogther for shipping no matter how much stuff you get (well any site worth ordering from anyways)

I dont know where the hell RoyalMarineComm is getting those figures from and seems like he hasnt ordered from a german site before

Sure if you did pay 30euro p+p for each item, it would probably still be cheaper than komplett/dabs!

eek! i was only going on what the op said.
in his original post he asked what the postage was from german sites. 30 euro per item?

i assumed he checked it out.

my bad if i was taken up wrong. never meant to imply that they were.

    sorry! :o:o
