Banned from After hours

I was banned from After Hours for using the phrase "uncultured ignorants" to describe people who wish to ban the use of any Christian symbolism at Christmas time - the thread was referring to new arrivals to Ireland who are overly-pc, be they American, Israeli, Tunisian, whatever. I have no interest/belief in religion, but put forth the rational arguement that wishing to ban such imagery is a profoundly ignorant and culturally unenlightened viewpoint. Who can argue that religious imagery, e.g. nativity scenes, are a traditional part of Christmas (in Ireland).

Having pmmed the moderator, Terry, he seemed to understand my reasoning, but still wouldn't remove my week-long ban - too proud perhaps! Instead he pointed to a previous thread where I had been advocating a multi-cultural society. His claim was that my comment "uncultured ignorants" was directly at odds with a previous thread, and was, as such, an example of trolling - which it obviously was not.

When a moderator is clearly in the wrong, as this guy was, can such a decision be reversed? I know my ban is just about finished, but I had forgotten about it until now!

Those people do have a culture. It's just different to yours. Which kinda makes reading the rest of your post a complete waste of time. sorry.

Nah, we know you're running for office, so the apology was expected with the possibility of baby kissing and a tell all interview/book deal. :)

I'll be honest, I can't think of any reason as to why this should be a banable offense.

While I would disagree with the OP entirely on the point in question, I think the banning was unfair.

Maybe Terry just wants to go out in a blaze of glory ;)

Can you see how you were out of line on that thread?

I can. all so often that type of thing would turn a thread into a bag mad racist rant which would piss everyone off and end up with insults and abuse flying everywhere. it's harsh, but it's part of zero tolerance type stuff that you modulators do. preventionist policy.

That's BS and you know it. A hell of a lot of threads have the potential to end up as you describe, but they are not curtailed. Furthermore, I'm not aware of any zero tolerance policy on opinions that aren't exactly politically correct, and if we start banning people for this, then it really would be a case of the moderators pushing their opinions.

It's practically already happened in Politics, and it's difficult to argue some points there at times, I'd like to see a lot less of this kind of thing.

Don't get me wrong, there could be a lot more to the banning than what is evident here, but we should not start banning people because their opinions can possibly be interpretated as racist.

I imagine the ban was more to do with the behaviour after said post than just on that post alone.

Ban was unfair. Didnt seem like a troll. Was he warned before?

It's not BS? for a while there after hours was one immigrant rant after another. there is a fairly heavy handed policy towards comments that could potentially incite others (as far as i can make out)... it's needed tbh in my view.

true. however, expressing your opinion is all well and good but you can do it without resorting to insults or derogatory phrasing. "uncultured ignorants" could easily be misconstrued as an insult or potential troll attempt.

He got an infraction for the post itself from Terry.

yeah but he did have a point, putting a stop to the nativity at christmas time is just silly. (Unless of course, non christian kiddies were forced to take part)

Surely a ban or post must be judged on its own merits?

Saying someone is uncultured does not mean they have no culture...which kinda makes your post look rather silly. To be uncultured means to be culturally unenlightened.

Personally its not the "uncultured ignorants" bit that blew up my trollometer but the strong whiff of racist "der tekkin ur jawbs!!!!" that came after it.

I agree with the point but a week's ban to direct you towards a better phraseology wont kill you.

    DeV.

    LMAO.
You waited until the day your ban was up to start a feedback thread.
That's a new one to me.
You could have just sent me the PM I asked you to send (to remind me to lift the ban).
Your ban has now been lifted.

If I had been wrong about your ban, I would have had no problem in admitting my mistake.
However, I don't believe it was a mistake.
I've just had a look back through the thread and stand by my decision.

I really should just ignore this bizarre post, but saying there is "a strong whiff of racist "der tekkin ur jawbs!!!"" is disgusting. I recommend you watch 'The Lives of Others' - a film set in 1984 East-Berlin, in an era when conversations and letters etc were routinely monitored for even the most tenuous of evidence that could hint at non-socialist attitudes. Your above interpretation of my comments displays an equivalent political moronism that was rampant in Eastern Europe before the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Let's look a the scenario in question: a nativity scene, or crib, in a creche. A presumably non-Irish person objects to this non-christian imagery, for fear of their infant being brain-washed into an all-things-christian mindset. As such, the crib is removed. The actions of the objecting party are as idiotic as a raving christian objecting to a santa claus picture being displayed, in the same creche, as an insensitive slight on his christian heritage. We could argue all day about which of these two tiresome bores is the more culturally ignorant, but I don't think it would be harsh to call either of them an "uncultured ignorant" - I certainly wouldn't give them the time of day.
