Hello all, I lost the only key I had for my car there on sunday and have been ringing around to get a new one cut. The car has no central or remote locking. Everwhere is quoting my 260-400 euro to get a new key. One lad said 160. But was unable to get the "codes" required from seat by the time he went on holidays today. The cars a 99, as I said no remote or central locking. Is a replacement key really that costly? Doesn't anyone know if this car really requires a chip to be programed? Sadly the owners manual is in the car so I cant check it

I know a "dummy" key (opens doors but not chipped so wont start the car) for my focus with central locking (not remote central locking) costs about €80 for Ford to cut. My dad got a spare key cut for a '95 Rover 100 (Metro) just off Camden Street, on Pleasants Street by Devitts pub a few months ago and it cost him €6 or €7. Saying that the keys for the Metro's are standard flat keys. Fogarty's in Dame Street cut all sorts of keys and do all sorts of locks and safes, so maybe try them?

Yes it needs a transponder chip in the key and that needs to be coded. To code it a security code is needed. This code can be got from Seat but maybe not at this time of year.

A good locksmith will be able to cut a key if you give him the key code. This is different to the security code. Your Seat dealer should be able to supply the key code straight away. The cost of a new key from a locksmith inc the chip is approx €70.

I am able to extract the security codes from the car so I can complete jobs like this in house. I imagine a good VAG specialist should be able to do likewise.

Your options are a new key from a dealer or a locksmith. Tow it to the dealer to get it coded or find a specialist who will do it on the side of the road. Most garages are finishing up a half day tomorrow so I am afraid you may have limited your options by waiting.

The dealer (and others) will tell you that it cant be done on the side of the road and it is something that only the dealer can do. What they really mean is that they cant do it.

Sh*te. My MK2 Ibiza only has one key since the previous owner broke the other off in the passenger side lock.

If I want to get a spare done will it be the same hassle as what you've said?

Yes, the same applies to your car except you can drive it somewhere to get it done.
