Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Getafe Anderlecht
    Girondins Bordeaux Galatasaray

Celtic most likely to draw Man Utd. Odds from Coral:
    Man United 7/2
    Chelsea 4/1
    Inter Milan 5/1
    Porto 6/1
    Sevilla 6/1
    Barcelona 13/2
    Real Madrid 13/2

I have a feeling it'll be Chelsea but hopefully Real.

Unless they are saying it's rigged, how do they figure Celtic have any more of a chance of drawing Utd in a random draw than anyone else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,345 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

Of course it is rigged to an extent. It is not a random draw as countries from the same association cannot be drawn against each other

Eirebhoy posted something the other day were some guy had worked out the statistical possibilities of who celtic could get.
    Pretty amazing really.

Theres a couple of teams in Rangers pot id like to avoid, Helsingborgs being one...because we all know what would happen there!
Would like spurs though, would be a good atmosphere for that one.

Man Utd/Chelsea can only draw one of 5 teams. Inter can draw one of 6 so have less chance of drawing Celtic. Seville/Real/Barca can draw one of 7 so have even less chance.

The above means that Celtic are more likely to draw Chelsea or Man Utd than one of the Spanish or Italian teams (feck the rest for this example). The reason Man Utd are sole favourites is down to a domino effect.

Roma can draw 1 of 5 but not Man Utd. Schalke can draw 1 of 7 but not Chelsea. Therefore Chelsea have more chance of drawing Roma than Man Utd have of drawing Schalke.

It goes on and on and there's thousands of different combinations. Some Celtic fan used a program to work out the odds:
Our chances of drawing each team worked out to be:

    Man Utd 19.7%
    Chelsea 18.8%
    Inter Milan 13.4%
    Porto 12.5%
    Sevilla 12.5%
    Real Madrid 11.5%
    Barcelona 11.5%
    AC Milan 0%

And if you want to know, the value bet in those Coral odds is Chelsea. :)

there's such a gulf in class between Pot A and B of the CL...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

If you added Pool and Arsenal to pot A and removed Porto, Id agree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,604 ✭✭✭herbieflowers

yeah of course, I was just generalising...good ol' pedantry is alive and well on boards! But yeah, gulf (minus Arsenal and Pool :) )

That's very clever and interesting too. Wish our maths teacher had shown us stuff like that. Any odds it'll be the Liverpool and Arsenal games shown on RTE?

    Full draw is;

    Celtic V barca
    Lyon V Man Utd
    Schalke V Porto
    Liverpool V Inter
    Roma V Madrid
    Arsenal V Milan
    Olymp1acos V Chelsea
    Fenerbache V Seville

5 decent enough games there, celtic, Lyon, Liverpool, Roma, Arsenal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Arsenal - Milan game is gonna be fascinating. Will be a real interesting test to see if Fabregas can pull the strings around Pirlo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

gah, ffs, worst team we could draw, very annoyed :/ Chelsea easily through, Liverpool and Arsenal in a very very very tough draws

But to be honest, I think playing tough teams prepare you for winning. As such, if we want to win, we might as well get these early.

Hmm, would've rathered avoiding Lyon since their renaissance in the last month or so. Still, I fancy United to go through.

Lyon generally make the Quarter Finals though.

After the "round of 16" is it a random draw for the quarter finals?

I think Arsenal can take an aging AC Milan side. Keeping key players fit is obviously vital.

have the dates been confirmed yet, the actual dates of them, not just ties will be played march 4/5

Not a great draw some good tasty games but some relative duds.

Two from Schalke, Porto, Fenerbache and Seville will be in the last eight, while three from AC Milan, Inter ,Arsenal, Roma, Madrid and Liverpool won't.

    Doesn't seem right somehow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Thats a rather condecending view of team a like Porto which has won it lets not forget.

Everyone says this every year about this "aging" Milan side. To their peril tbh.

At least it's knock out from now on and the silly country protectionism is gone too. And there are some cracking ties even in this round.

The most boring match of the round will be Inter vs Liverpool

The most exciting will be Arsenal vs Milan

With Milan and Inter both due to play their home legs second will that have any effect on the dates of matches? Do they always try and leave a few days between matches on the San Siro?

    Celtic V Barca - Barca
Lyon V Man Utd - Man Utd
Schalke V Porto - Schalke (I really hope they do, great club)
