My friend, who is a girl...

Anyone else think it's about time we got a word to describe a friend who is a girl, or a friend who is a boy?

The Spanish have "amigo" for a friend who is a boy and "novio" for a "boyfriend", or "amiga" for a friend who is a girl and "novia" for a girlfriend.

So let's start a revolution and get ourselves a word! I bet some smart arse is going to quote me and say "wrong. we already have a word blah blah blah" well if we do, I don't know it!

    Any suggestions?

blokes cant just be friends with girls.

From what you are saying the Spanish have words for friend and words for lover. Just like us except gender dependant. What are you saying, you rather we use the Spanish words?

Anyhow IMO it's either 'my friend who won't ride me' or 'the friend I wouldn't ride'

Ya could just say something that starts with "My friend <insert something they did>(non-sexual;))" Then to explain it, start of with "she"...thats explanatory itself, no need to learn a whole extra word for it.

    Seconded.

Doesn't friend + name just do the job?

    No.
That one usually ends with the person I'm talking to asking "did you do her yet?".

Yeah and what if your friends name is Juniper*?

*that's the first name that came up when I googled "both a boys and girls name"

If you've a friend called juniper then you already have bigger problems.

And isn't that what is on your mind really?
    cormie wrote:

In that case the answer to "Have you rode her?" is either "Yea" or "No, he's a guy" - Problem solved

why don't we just start speaking spanish?

It might be a bit awkward for non-spanish speakers or

Puede ser que sea un pedacito torpe para los altavoces no-españoles
-my spanish is a little rusty:p

I think "friend" works just fine. Nothing could show that it's a platonic relationship more than a genderless noun.

Isnt it just Girlfriend and Boyfriend but people dont use either of these words due to their modern uses. Taken from 3 dictionaries:

    girlfriend
    –noun
    1. a frequent or favorite female companion; sweetheart.
    2. a female friend.

    And same for the boyfriend

Just drop the 'r'. If you call a girl a fiend it's obvious you don't want to sleep with her......

TBH I really hate they way newspapers report stuff like this. You hear of rape / violence trials where someone is described as a "girlfriend" when in reality they only met that night , "randomer" might be a better word.

like the Eksimos and the many words for snow we need more words to describe the levels of closeness. One of their langagues has a word which translates as "I like him but I wouldn't go seal hunting with him"

I don't think there is much need to specify the sex of a friend when you mention them. Perhaps when you say he or she later in the sentence all will become clear.
