i was surprised to see that despite the family fun day which surely should have filled our section (8oo) therre was a relativly low turnout of 600+....

It might have something to do with the horrible weather that day??

The weather was a big factor thats for sure. The fact exams are coming up for a lot of the kids as well might have something to do with it. Plus wasnt there rugby on that day also.
It seems when there is any LOI game on other than a friday, all clubs end up getting less than what they would have expected. This was shown across most if not all the fixtures that day. Even Bohs failed to fill there stand against Shamrock Rvs.

When the club did a sports day last year against Monaghan or Longford (cant remember which) there was over 1,000 people at it. That was when we where in the first div and getting lower crowds than we are now. So above reasons where definitely a factor.

I wonder how big the crowd will be for another Galway side tomorrow. Hopefully people come out and support us. This is the start of our defense of the cup, so I hope people will come out for what is hopefully the beginning of another cup run. How good was last year:D

Yeah, there was a lot on that day, and the weather didn't help.

Hopefully a good game tomorrow. I'll be there for the first half anyway. Busy life.

Still a few players missing from injury, but hopefully a home win.

ye i guess im just being a pessimist, if i remember last year it was also a sunday afternoon (?) and was just hoping for a decent crowd based on our trend, success etc. obv the weather impacted on it but still for it be one of the lower turnouts...ah well....bring on tomorrow! lol

dno if this has been posted but here it is again.
this is in order of seeding
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%9311_UEFA_Europa_League#Second_qualifying_round

    Olympiacos
    Beşiktaş
Dinamo Bucureşti or Rapid Bucureşti (depends on TAS's decision concerning the match Rapid-FC Timisoara: 1-0 on the court but 0-3 because Rapid used 2 players illegally)

    Levski Sofia
    Austria Wien
    Winners of match involving Anorthosis
    Brøndby (denmark)
    Rapid Wien
    APOEL
    Wisła Kraków
    Karpaty Lviv (ukraine)
    Marítimo (portugal, nice island place)
    Baník Ostrava (czech republic)
    IF Elfsborg
    Utrecht
Winners of match involving Randers (denmark)
    Motherwell
Winners of match involving Kalmar FF (sweeden)
    Lausanne-Sport (switzerland)
    Cercle Brugge
Winners of match involving Bnei Yehuda (israel now wudnt that b fun)
    Stabæk (norway)
    Ventspils (latvia)
    Molde (norway)
    Maccabi Tel Aviv
    Dukla Banská Bystrica (slovakia)
Winners of match involving Nitra (slovakia)
Winners of match involving Rabotnički (macedonia)
    Honka (finland)
Winners of match involving MYPA (finland)
    Maribor (slovenia)
Winners of match involving Gefle ç (sweeden)
    Dinamo Minsk
    OFK Beograd
    Spartak Zlatibor Voda (serbia)
Winners of match involving Zrinjski (bosnia)
    Baku (azerbajan)
Winners of match involving Qarabağ (azerbajan)
Winners of match involving Ruch Chorzów (poland)
    Cibalia (croatia)

all of these teams are a good bit above us as an irish team in terms of ranking, realistically we wouldnt be favourites even at home except for the bottom teams (or if a flukey team gets through from the previous round). Some of them might be quite hard to get to and others will obviously be quite tough especially away from home.

That said on top form, with a bit of luck we could/should probably take any of them (motherwell anybody...?). note that near the top in terms of seedings is an austrian team, bohs were unlucky to lose to salzburg who again were champions and did very well last year in tthe europa league. Derry only lost by a goal on aggregat to sofia last year and look at the situation they wre in. st pats also beat elfsborg 2 years ago (elfsborg last year beat the portugese team). the top 3 there tho would probably be nightmares.

So, here it is. The defence of our cup begins tonight. I shall be present, gentlemen?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Very very poor crowd tonight. 150-200, tops.

Fingal were 1-0 up thanks to Zayed. Plenty of other chances too.

imo as stated a very very poor crowd, the game its self got off to a good start from a fingal point of view we wer all over them in the opening mins than got our goal around the 15th min but than prity much set back for the rest of the game. even though mervue never really looked a threat for most of the game they did pull it back to 1-1 around the 35th min. just before half time maher got a straight red card for a late challenge on a mervue player ( dont know why it was a straight red? yellow yes but not red )
2th half started off were the first ended, fingal just passing the ball around ( they are very good a keep ball it has to be said:D ) but they never realy posed much of a threat on goal. mervue had a great chance at the end to make it 1-2 but a goal mouth scramble and some great keeping from Clarke made sure it dident go in and it finished 1-1.

all in all not a great game, mervue will see that as a great result away from home but fingal will see it as a disaster.

    ( thanks for coming ross :p )

All in all a terrible result, the worst Ive seen Fingal play all season. Mervue were absolutely useless and as per usual we sink to that teams level.

What is the reason behind the low attendance?

Beautiful weather, people having BBQ, people having a few cold ones, people away for the long weekend, people working, etc.

Poor attendances at most games last night, from the look of things.

Then again, I think there were 2 Mervue fans at the game.

We cant use the weather excuse again paul. We use that one when its raining so we cant use it when its nice and sunny. I blame the volcanic ash cloud and rockee for the draw :)

It was always going to be a bad night attendance wise for all clubs, This period in the season every year means bad attendances for a multitude of reasons.
Its no coincidence though, that our good friend used the one time our crowd hasnt been bigger than shells to try and have a dig. Its also no coincidence that he did it when shells where not at home and our crowd couldnt be measured against what would have been an extremely low crowd for shells against the Bus lads.

Couldn't make the match last night but it seems the result and the attendance were disappointing.

    How did the players do?
