    quick question about heat.
our king charles pup (8 months) has gone into heat about 2 weeks now.(first noticed bleeding).

just wondering how we'll know she has finished her cycle?

as we have a male pup as well we have had to seperate them. vet won't spay her until she had gone through heat once and puts on a bit more weight.
    thanks.

On average, a bitch is in season for app 3 weeks but she is usually fertile from day 8-15 (willing to mate). Please note that those are guidelines, they can vary, especially since it is her first heat. You need to make sure that she cannot escape (oh yes, they will find means! not just the males will go to any length). Sometimes the urge to wee is very strong in bitches in heat, again, in the first heat your dog will be confused as well with all the hormones raging.

You need to keep an eye out for any vaginal discharge other than normal coloured blood and please do not let her swim during that time as she could contract Pyometra quite easily, especially in stagnant water.

The average is three weeks but can last up to four weeks and it's when the bleeding stop is when she'll be most fertile. Best to keep your dogs apart a bit longer.

Sorry EGAR posted at same time.

    thanks
Yea she's well secured can't get out. she's staying in my mothers at the moment
as it was driving the other pup mental. want to get them back together as seperating them has them both out of sorts.
Is there any tell tale sign that it's safe to bring them back together?

Her vulva swells up when she is in heat, that is one sign. I would wait the full 3 weeks and then bring them together under supervision and see if he has interest in her. If he has, separate them again.
