Which club which has never been Football league champions (and by this I mean Premiership or old first division champions) would have been once if simple goal difference rather than goal average had been used to separate two teams tied on points?

    Strange but true.

    (English league BTW)

Cardiff City, lost out by something like 0.02 of a goal around 1923/4

    God that was quick.

    Correct.

Both Cardiff and Huddersfield were tied on 57 points.

Cardiff had scored 71 and conceded 34
Huddersfield had scored 70 and conceded 33. So they would have lost on goals scored had goal difference rather than goal average been used.

Mind you, if three points for a win had applied, Huddersfield would still have won. For Cardiff to be successful they would have to have achieved their feat between the 1976-77 and 1980-81 seasons when goal difference was introduced to separate teams but it was still only two points for a win.
