Your ability to spell perhaps:D?(seriously though, txt spk on boards isn't allowed)

It depends on what kind of Civic Coupé your looking for really. I wouldn't be bothered with them really as they were designed for the US, and they are very girly looking. The usual things with any car apply, make sure it's clean, the mileage is genuine, the service history is complete, it hasn't been clocked etc. The Civic is a reliable car, but they have the worst security system in the entire world and I wouldn't fancy a crash in an EG Civic either!

I presume you want an EG Civic(the 3 door hatchback one, the Coupé is an EJ1/2) or else the newer EJ6/9 Civic 3 door. The EG/EJ1/2 has no security at all, somebody I know has opened the door of an EG using his house key!
The 3 door hatch is the one people tend to modify for whatever reason(some people modify EG saloons too). The newer ones are meant to be better for security, but either Civic is expensive to insure from what I've heard because they're so easy to steal. That has to be the biggest weakness of the Civic IMO.

civics... overly priced insurance , too slow , terrable car.

also they are the most stolen car in eire so i'd shop around and get a better car for the same price bracket. ( i.e toyota mr2 , bmw e30 etc. )

i got a 97 red civic coupe lsi 1.6 for my first car in may..its a lovely car i think, my bro in law is a mechanic and fitter so i stuck a lovely exhaust on it, and an induction kit the other day..sounds quality, not too loud! its gettin lowered now in a few weeks and might put a type r kit on it..nothing too flash.

What model coupe are you looking for EG/EK shape etc (heres a link to wikipedia to see them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Civic )

As E92 said look out for the usual stuff and check the oil cap for white foam, rust on the arches on the older models can be an issue but just keep an eye out,

They are a very reliable car but security is an issue mostly as jap models come with none, ive just imported mine and the first mod was a clifford alarm and a fuel cut, but saying they can be opened with any house key is an exaggeration.

Oh and dont mind SIR he hasnt got a clue, he just loves bashing civics  handleing is good as standard and there are alot of aftermarket suspension upgrades out there is you want to go that route, personally im running a set of tein coilovers and GAB struts this with a sticky set of potenzas is more than enough to shut SIR up :p

if you want some specialist help try www.civicsportsclub.net

hmmm , haven driven most civics available the only nice model is the EY2 aka honda civic shuttle.... manly because they don't break... also when you spend most of your time in work replacing civic clutches and re-fitting brake lines... you kind of get a chip in your shoulder.

the most likable is the eg6 sirII modle though the eek4 looks better...

did you cincider everything else for that price range ?? ( i.e nissan pulsar , hyundia coupe , older model skyline etc )

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,528 ✭✭✭copeyhagen

you would be doin well to get any of them for the price of a civic coupe! i havent had any problems on mine yet (touch wood) and the insurance for anything over a 1.6 on a provisional would be killer for me personally, not sure about op details.

as usual SIR. firstly how could you ever compare a civic shuttle to ......well anyother civic, "they dont break" civics are will known for their reliablity, one of mine is driven everyday has 140000 miles on it and has never let me down just regular maintance, sometimes i think you come out with these comments just to get a rise out of people other times im not too sure.

    I agree.

honda and the civic are well known for there reliability.

the coupe i'd go for is the 1.6 vti, lovely looking car, great power for a 1600cc and vtec!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭S.I.R

if you want reliablity go for the 1300 engine , if you want to go fast , steal the 2.4 vtec out of the accord and bolt it in the rear.... if you want a mix of both , go for an integra.

civic coupes arent great and are normally trashed before sold. Never buy anything modified unless they had it done in a Good garage and anything over 100,000 miles without an engine rebuild shouldn't be touched as the head gasket will go at any given moment... also they under steer pretty bad , clutches are Terrible , suspension is always lowered by idiots and is always off by atleast 5 mm which makes the car handle even worse.

new brakes should be applied all round as when i pushed a ek4 sirII to 130 the brake linee popped and then i soon found the rear pads where bald when the guy who owned it put it into the round-a-bout.

the shuttle can be compared to the or civics on the basis that all civics are the same except for the uni-body shells that holds them together.... besides "how much power do you need ?? because civics needs alot of work before turbo'ing before they can keep up with most modern mid range cars.

at best you'll get 300 hp before a turbo which will take you up to 500-550 hp.

hence why i think that money would be better spent on , well anything else japanese , civics are very common which can benefit fit you when they break.

imo go for the ek9 as it looks the best buy , aswell as everyone wants one since the NFS feature.

though if i wanted one i'd buy the eg6 or any more boxy style before that because im retro.

did you check the insurance on any of the civic range yet or are you just "shooting in the dark "

EG6 All the way! I don't particularly like Civics, but the eg6 sir has something special bout it.

Honda and Toyota, firstly they'll never let you down and secondly there there worlds best built cars!!

Im not biased as i work for a Opel/Mazda dealer and drive an Opel but i know for sure the Civic aint a bad car, drove a 92 EG with a Integra Dc2 Type R under the hood for long enough to know there reliable to drive and comfy also ;)

If the head gasket goes before 100k, it's only due to pure neglect and letting the coolant run low - I've worked in a Honda dealership for nearly 2 years and we have only seen 2 come in with head gasket's gone. We regularly get civics in in excess of 300k that are running fine; they only items they need are regular services and timing belt changes.

Civics are bullet-proof, they will take loads of abuse - the only thing that will cripple one is sheer neglect.

The only complaint I've ever really seen with coupes, that sets it apart from other civics, is interior rattles.

Can i just laugh at this, what planet are you on?
Civics are one of the most reliable second-hand cars, a head gasket will go on any car thats not maintained correctly, but to say it will go around the 100k mark is ridiculous.
Its just the worst example ever, there's so many scumbags hammering them around, bouncing the revs off the limiter, and they still drive for ever.

    300bhp from an NA?

dont mind him man he aint got a clue hes just looking for a rise. But your dead right they take some amount of abuse

but just to let you know there are K20 civics out there reaching 300bhp in NA form, now imagine that in an EG hatch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭E92

300 bhp from a 2.0 NA? Ye must be sh1tti1ng me lads.

Unless it's a race car, I don't for a second believe that 150 bhp per litre is achievable. I know Honda can get a very high bhp per litre out of their VTEC engines, but 150 bhp per litre is ridiculous IMO. The S2000 managed 237 bhp, which by my calculations is 118.5 bhp per litre, but that revs to 9,000 rpm!

    Now 300 bhp from a 2.0 with a turbo, that's a different story:D.

I'll take your word for it, but i never though 300bhp was possible. I know the older TypeR (1.8) could get to 230+bhp without forced induction.
But i suppose never under estimate what you can do with a Honda. ;)

goes away to look through carzone to see if he can afford a DC5
