Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Been told i need to get my van tested before i can get it insured, its 21year old, great shape internally but the body is showing age. My problem is that i was informed it needs to be an inspection by a DOE garage, although the insurers are only looking for the basic lights, brakes, and stuff, my local DOE will not do an inspection without doing a full DOE test, needless to say, on emissions alone i doubt i could get it through even though it is a very clean petrol engine, it is 21year old!! anyone got any suggestions, or gone through the same problem ?

Did your insurance explicitly say "DOE" ?

Mine just mentioned "engineers report" which I got done by an insurance assessor ...who came round, had a bit of a look around, flicked a few switches, took my 50 euro and that was that.

    Hi peasent,

Thanks for the soopa fast reply.
I had the forms to submit to the campervan club which included a garage report as the vihicle was over 15years old, i was then told that as the camper was over 20 years this would need a DOE garage stamp and a brakes print out. Must say i had never heard of this before and neither had the DOE garages, they tell me they will only do the full test.

Any contact details for your insurance assessor ??

Excuss the drunken scibble please, it is xmas night. :D

Can't remember any details about the insurance assessor. It was just some guy out of the yellow pages, specialising in vehicle assessment.

On the other hand, a completete test may not be such a bad idea. After all, the safety of your family depends on the state of that camper.

I don't think that your insurance will be bothered with emmissions, as long as the camper is roadworthy.

Very true peasent, and they did say just that, and as my kids are regular campers in the summer i wouldnt take chances, the problem is that the DOE want to do the full test, they say they will not sign the report unless it passes the full test.

Can a 21 year old van pass emmission targets set in the 21st century ?

    No

But then it shouldn't have to. All it needs to pass is the emmission targets from 21 years ago.

If that is the case you have put my mind at rest, the engine runs like the day it was bought, thanks peasent.

Hope this topic has enlightened some members to the 20 year rule and not just the 15.

    Merry Christmas!!

Just been through a DOE on a 21yr old camper myself. They will do the full DOE and then just stamp the enginneers report. It was definitely worth doing as they found a fault with the steering:eek:. The guy selling it to me rectified it and it passed the DOE with flying colours.:)

    Hi

Just bringing in a classic VW Camper from the UK. Do I need to get a DOE cert to tax it? I know I will probably need the engineers report for insurance.

    Tks

I've been through this recently with imported camper. passed test no problem. Havn't taxed yet, but I understand DOE is not necessary as van qualifies for camper class for which there is no test.
