    Hi guys,
I am taking a trip to Halfords tomorrow to get my first car kitted out properly. It already has mats and seat covers, sat nav, and a lovely Hello Kitty air freshener but aside from that I have nothing for it, nothing even to wash it! Can anyone give me some pointers on what I should get. I always feel completely overwhelmed going into Halfords but at the same time I don't want to be stuck if I should ever break down or anything.

    Thanks!

    or....

    AA Cover :)

(Nah just kidding. Although in addition to the above, it might be an idea if you can afford it - it's already paid for itself a few times in my case)

I feel the same way. Halfrauds is a place best avoided by those who do not like ripspeed bling.

You don't really need anything right now. I'd suggest a flashlamp though.

Unless you are incredibly good at cars (which I doubt judging by the tenor of your post) there is little point having tools or jump leads. I certainly don't carry them, and I would like to think I'm not half bad mechanically.

Modern cars rarely break down, but when they do it is normally something more that a distributor cap or the points. Just ring a recovery company; I have experience of Hibernian rescue first hand and must say I am impressed. A mechanic can't even fix a car at the side of the road anymore.

Rope and Duct Tape - definitely serial-killer items, or so I'm told, though as long as you don't have any bin-bags, the Guards might not be suspicious if they search your car - just a thought.:)

They might ask questions when they find the hatchet under the passenger seat ;)

I got some stuff in Halfords today, I got:

    Antifreeze/Summer coolant
    De-icer spray
    Chamois cloth
    Sponge
Turtle wax Extreme wash & wax
    Turtle wax glass cleaner
Windscreen cleaning wipes to keep in the car
Reflective white tape to make me more visible
    CD holder for the visor

I still need to get a torch, some jump leads and some anti-rain spray for the wing mirrors.
They had these mirror you stick on either the car or your wing mirrors, they are for your blind spot, might get one. They had a special mirror for reversing as well.

As your still learning to drive i'd advise you to hold off on the blind spot mirrors until you've learnt to use the blind spots in your car. You'll be marked on it on your test.

A safety word would save you a lot of morning after cleanup.

Didn't forget it....use the natural lime in the mountains. No purchases of lime on record, no paper trail back to me

Thats why ya go down the country to some local builders providers and buy a few bags for cash.. no trace of the transaction anywhere ;)

Thats what I do anyway :p

That's what I was thinking, they had these mad "reversing sensors" that sense how close you are to the car parked behind you and beep when you're too close! I think I would be better off learning myself, would be better in the long run...

You just reminded me of a night where meself and me mate stopped off at the local 24h garage to get fags (lovely fags, I still miss them). I drove in and a couple of guards followed us in, obviously starting the night shift, came in to stock up. We were in school with the guy at the counter and he cracked that joke. "I don't know where you can get bin bags, rope but i do have duck tape if that helps".

    Oh how we laughed.

They're a last resort solution. A friend had them fitted to his car for his girlfriend who just couldn't get used to reversing (well, without hitting something). They work very well actually and they're very good value.
