Derry City Christmas rink

I seen in the paper than Derry City had a temporary rink opened up the week before christmas. Did anyone one here check it out? I was wondering if it was busy and if people had been encouraged to take up skating?

If this was popular then maybe the people of Derry would like to see a permanent rink in place in the city? There are only two other rinks in Ireland one North of the border in Dundonald and other south in Dundalk. There was talk of one in Coleraine but it would be great to see one in Derry too.

If anyone would like to contact the council and raise the issue that'd be a start!

    Thanks
    Kevin!

Dundonald Ice Rink is good but the atmosphere generally is poor.

Anyone who has been to the Bowling Alley at Pennyburn in Derry will know that it has a much better atmosphere with plenty for adults and children to do.

An ice rink there would be the "icing" on the cake!
There was a temporary one there years ago but it was rubbish.

Yeah dundonald is just about good for public skating while the new rink in Dundalk is used by the Irish Ice Hockey association for league matches and is hosting 4 Belfast Giants games this season.

We need more rinks and it's hard to believe that cities like Derry etc don't have one.

We really need a load more names before someone will give this the time of day

The attrraction of Dundonald means that schools, youth groups and church groups go there for their outings.

I was told a few years ago that Castlereagh Borough residents have one of the lowest council rates in NI because the Ice Bowl does so well. Possibly because it is the only one of its kind in NI since the Jet Centre closed.

These places are obviously high risk endeavours for local councils as Coleraine found out.

The problem with Derry is where to put it. They cacked up badly shoe-horning the Millenium forum where they did when a larger Arena could have been accomodated at Fort George. Even the Bowling Alley in Pennyburn is too well hid...it amazes me how well it does all the same.
