I'm not good with computers so bear with me!

I recieved a new Dell Insprion 1721 for Christmas off the red man, and very happy I was too!

However, the operating system it came with is Windows Vista.

This wouldn't really be a problem except my parents are on Perlico for the home PC internet connection, a broadband box we connect to the PC via USB. Its called the ZyXEL P-660RU Series.

The problem is the installer CD for this box will only give me the options of Windows 98/ME or Windows 2000/XP to install it on the computer, and consequently I can't get an internet connection since it dosen't seem to be compatible. :(

Can anyone help? If you need any more information just ask! Anyone who can lend any advice would be greatly appreciated. :D Thanks!!

Have you tried just plugging the network cable into the pc and see if the internet works? Usually these cds are just a "installation guide" and might not be needed to configure settings, then again some ISPs may program the cds to add custom details too during install. I'm saying try plugging a network cable in over usb, for the simple fact vista should probably pick it up as a network more than usb if that is possible of course ;)

Yep I gave that a go before I found the CD again at all, it just came up as Device Not Recognised!!

Might have to wait a few weeks to be back in the college flat for the wireless connection hahaha

Connect to the modem with a network cable ONLY. Ignore USB.

The router you have is meant to be able to support both USB and ethernet connections at once.

You're already using the USB connection so connect your laptop using the ethernet (network connection - rj45 plug) connections on your new PC and the Zyxel router. (I think that this is a yellow cable that came with the Zyxel router)

The nice thing about using the ethernet connection is that you don't have to install any drivers (assuming Dell did their job correctly). So no need for the CD. Just plug in and go - then power up your new PC.

Accessing Boards from the laptop now to say I had forgotten all about that yellow cable buried in a disused drawer gathering dust somewhere - plugged it in and it all worked straight away :D

Think the home PC was too old to be compatible with such a cable and thats why it hasnt been looked at since we tossed it in the drawer many months ago

Thanks to everyone that helped, now, anyone know any porn sites...? lol :p

    Enda.
