Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does the XBOX 360 upscale movies like the PS3 or do you need the HD-DVD drive to do this?

The 360 itself upscales, quite well too.... I'm not even sure if the HD drive does, never tried it

It does but nowhere near as well. The edges of objects appear pixellated. In comparison, the PS3 makes DVDs look as crisp and clear as a Blu-Ray. (I've tried them both on my 32 inch Philips HDTV.)

Pity the PS3's game library isn't as good:)

yeah I always watch dvds on my ps3 rather than my 360. My family guy dvd appears in 4:3 ratio on the 360 for some reason but it's 16:9 on the ps3.

If you want to change the ratio on the 360, hit any button during playback and that grey list of options appears at the bottom of the screen---goto Screen Options (I think thats what its called) and fiddle about with it til it looks good.

The 360 only upscales DVD's (up to 1080i over component, 1080p over HDMI) when using the HD Cable. Otherwise, it'll only play DVD at 480p.

I used my 360 to watch dvds for the first time in ages and I was suprised how good it looked.

I was using a hdmi cable and was watching Rome series 2 and on close ups of peoples faces it looked excellent

If played over SCART / composite / s-video, it plays back DVDs in their native resolution, which in the PAL territories is 575p. If played over component, it can upscale but it causes "jaggies" along the edges. PS3 (I grudgingly admit) rules in terms of upscaling. Transformers SD-DVD looks fantastic through it, whilst when played through the 360 looks only OK
