convenient that you can remember exactly how Podolski played, but not Ronaldo.

oh dear god please dont turn this thread into an endless arguement on something totally irrelevant to the topic at hand!! **** sake, ronaldo was fantastic during that tournament, podolski was also very good, im sure the perception of ronaldo by the media did effect the fifa decision from a PR standpoint and i think its naive to think that its not possible that it happened.....

can you imagine the stick fifa would have gotten if he had got the award??? england are very important to fifa, along with spain they are the two most important footballing nations now in terms of revenue generated for fifa and interest in the game in general....

i imagine that and him being a home hero and the fact that he did play well probbaly had alot to do with him getting the award, but does it really matter in a thread about transfer rumours and **** like that?
Oh dear god will you stop trying to say that the English media stopped Ronaldo getting the award from Fifa and then we can get it back on topic, instead of giving out about been off topic to only go a stupid rant again about why Ronaldo didn't get the award. Ever think it might be because he dives around the place like an *******n diver!

    How is it convenient?
Podolskis performance was memorable, Ronaldo's was memorable for 2 things. The rooney incident and seeing him crying

may i suggest you start a new thread on this topic? you can title it... who was the best player in a crap standard tournament in 2006? and as a footnote raise the issues about whether the media can influence fifa, the prime minister, chairman mao......you know, whoever else you wanna have a petty arguement about

this is not the place for this debate....please let it go

i hear united are lining up a bid for defoe.....wouldnt be bad but ive never seen him as a united player all the times he been linked with us

Just seen he was told he can leave Spurs but he doesnt want to. Understandable because once Berba leaves he will be first choice with Keane

i don't really get why he would want to go from being 3rd choice (at best) at spurs to being 3rd choice (at best) for United. MOney could really be the only factor, unless he feels winning trophies without doing much is meaningfull.

you should probably read all of peoples posts before quoting them and then getting the point wrong......maybe you could read the last paragraph? it wont take long....ill wait......................there you go!!!!!! your a big boy today!!!! now you understand that when i said he got it cause he played well, was the hometown hero and PR was not saying it was cuz of the english media that the other guy didnt get it, say it with me, im a big boy today.... dont quote me then take it out of context

as for your diving comment, have you actually watched any united games this season? also when was my original rant about why ronaldo didnt get the award? i am fairly sure that that response was my first on the subject, although maybe you got confused and mixed up peoples user names? do you tie your own shoe laces? im in confrontational mood......dont take most of this personally.....or do, whatever

im sure he feels he will get more opportunitys at united though if he choose to move there and if the rumours were true of course, i mean we desperatly need a different option up front and saha cant do it anymore it seems....the one i dont get is darren bent! why in gods name is nobody being linked with him, im sure hed be delighted to get out of spurs and back on the pitch, he is a good striker and i think even he could be a good option for us, although i still hold out hope for kenwayne jones!

i dunno, i cant see fergie moving for anyone like that though.....i think he will want a stop gap guy and do the big business in the summer, a loan move could be ideal if we go tthe right player

    ps, im serious about jones!

i would argue that he is diving less and less every year....i would also argue that alot of players dive more then him but get little or no stick from the media for obvious reasons, its easier cuz ronaldo has the reputation so people will jump on the band wagon, but i think its time to admit that he doesnt dive much at all anymore in relation to his first season, and second.... rooney dives alot but doesnt get any attention, fabregas drops like a sniper has shot him when it suits, gerrard isnt against taking a fall is he? and pretty much so do most of the "top players" so why always pick on ronaldo, do you think he dives on such a substantial level more then everybody else that he has to be singled out?

im sure nobody dives on whatever team you support

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 10,259 ✭✭✭✭Melion

But you stated your original comment as if he hasnt dived at all this season. Who cares how often he does it, he still does.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

no i also, so now gerrard is a diving bastard then yeah? and henry, and ronaldinho, and fabregas and rooney and drogba and keane and berba and crouch and ahhh you can keep naming in your own head, are you saying that these are all diving bastards too then? i mean it doesnt matter how often they do it, they still do it

Lads stop with all the petty spelling crap, consider it a warning, particuarly kryogen for starting the whole thing.

Anybody who says Ronaldo doesn't dive is kidding themselves. Anyone who thinks its a trait unique to him among lots of the players in the top clubs is kidding themselves, Ronaldo, Gerrard, Eboue, Drogba are all terrible divers. This however is utterly off-topic :)

I think Podolski deserved that award. At his age, 4 goals is an amazing achievement. That said, Ronaldo, as always, played brilliantly for his country, his performances were excellent. Infact, if you want to really know how good he was, watch the Dutch match, where their specific tactic to stop him and thus win the game was to kick Ronaldo off the pitch.

Portsmouth have signed an 18yo striker from Basle.

One for the future probably, so with only Benjani and Nugent available atm, I reckon we'll see a bid from them for Defoe (maybe 15mil?).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I wonder if Portsmouth are gona sell Nugent. If he's going on the cheap, United could do worse :)

[Jesus i've gotten desperate, I'm pretty much happy to sign any striker there is, I'm even thinking Defoe might not be the worst move]

Hmm, in his WHU days, I thought he would have been absolutely perfect for Utd, but since going to Tottenham I don't really think he ever recaptured his early promise.

United could certainly do worse though. That would be Nugent.

Defoe wouldn't be the worst signing imo.
He doesn't have the skill or creative play of a player like Rooney or Tevez, but we already have both of them. Invariably when United need to change things up, it is a need to being on a striker that will hassle the centre backs and be in a position to score from inside the box. Defoe would be different to what we already have, and that is a good starting point. I reckon he would do well with the chances the rest of the team would create for him. Ideally he would be bigger and stronger though - Anelka would be a very good signing for United, but i reckon he'll end up at Chelsea now.

Derby have had a bid for Savage accepted by Blackburn, I can see Keane jumping in on that seeing as he was meant to have had a bid turned down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,426 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Savage would be a great signing for Sunderland, and if i was him i'd be going to Sunderland as opposed to Derby, at least with Sunderland there is a chance of staying up.

Theres a 1 in 3 success rate in signing strikers from the Dutch league with crazy goal scoring records these days. For every Van Nistelrooy, theres the chance that you could end up with a Kezman or Kuyt.

    "Arabian fright off Dunnie"

Saudi Arabia striker Yasser Al Qahtani claimed last week to have turned down a £7million approach from Manchester City. But former City keeper John Burridge, working as a TV analyst in the Middle East, has a somewhat different take on proceedings.

He said: "Al Qahtani flew into Manchester with a huge entourage. He arrived at the City training ground like a prince and when he took part in his first training session, the members of his entourage lined the length of the touchline cheering his every move.

"When he got the ball, Richard Dunne smacked Al Qahtani with a good old fashioned 'welcome' tackle, and he fell on to the ground like a bag of chips.

"He started rolling around, squealing, then he was carried off. Then he started crying."

Cant be much worse than him :D

CELTIC are set to pull off an audacious swoop for Japan superkid Koki Mizuno.

Parkhead chiefs are close to sealing a deal for the midfielder dubbed the new Shunsuke Nakamura.

Agreements have been reached with Mizuno's club JEF United in Chiba and the 22-year-old could be a Celtic player within days.

    youtube:
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IkfJHhqJUrc

    Fan opinion:

"The lad (Mizuno - not Minuzo) is an attacking midfielder who can play right and centre mid. He's as fast as f***, he can dribble at least as well (probably better than) as McGeady, he is a free kick specialist, passing/crossing exceptional, shooting ability is marvelous and he's scared of nothing.

Youtube often flatters to deceive, feel free to have a look at any clips on there and what you are seeing is Koki week in and week out. I'd always assumed he would wind up in Italy or Spain, if we've got him, then our much maligned scouts deserve a serious slap on the back.

My nephew has been working in japan for the last 4 years and has been banging on about him for the last 18 months and I started following him about 6 months ago. The hairs on the back of my neck are seriously standing up at the thought of this."

Cisse would be a great signing, He was unlucky at Liverpool and was treated very unfairly by Rafa (one of Rafa's bad decisions I feel), played on the right and still had a better scoring record than the strikers.
Erikson knows what he is doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,067 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

Cisse would do well at City. Hes a confidence player and needs to play regularly and as a center forward and nothing else. He was played on the wing a lot at Liverpool and not played on a regular basis.

Boro have made an official approach for Fred from Lyon. Seems like we could be about to follow suit. We have also spoken to Newcastle about the availability of Martins.

Leaving the club is Dado. Marseille are interested so we may try use him as part of a deal to sign Samir Nasri.

Money talks and we're in the position to offer it. I'm not saying he would join us but we've a chance of European football (UEFA at the very least) and we're a team on the up. If no one else was interested at the time then why not?

Lassana Diarra and Martin Laursen to Newcastle....

If Laursen can stay fit then he'd be a great signing. Diarra looks a good player too.

If Diarra goes to Newcastle then Emre will be allowed to leave. Apparently Bayern Munich have agreed a deal in principle with Monaco also interested...

I really rate the little Turk, dunno what Allardyce is doing. I think he'd be a great signing for any team and will be sad to see him go.

Just to point out Laursen WON'T be sold during this transfer window, he may leave in the summer if his contract is up but that is also unlikely as MON will most likely offer him a contract.

I think Spurs should sign him. Then they could play 3-2-5, like they used to in the 90's, when Darren Anderton etc. were around.

Savage signs for Derby, turning down Sunderland:
Robbie Savage has revealed he rejected a move to Sunderland and took a pay cut to complete a £1.5m move from Blackburn to Derby County.
Savage, 33, will make his debut against Derby boss Paul Jewell's former club Wigan at Pride Park on Saturday.

He said: "Of course I was tempted by a move to Sunderland, for a manager like Roy Keane you are going to be tempted.

"I felt Derby and Paul wanted me more and for Derby to pay the fee they have shown how much they wanted me."

He added: "Paul also wanted me when he was manager at Wigan and that was a big factor in making me come.

"I have taken a pay cut to come and just play football and I am happy to do that. Blackburn could qualify for Europe but I would rather be playing week in week out. "I wanted to play first team football and Mark Hughes couldn't give me that on a regular basis. But the gaffer at Blackburn was fantastic for me, he gave me permission to speak to people."

Savage joined Rovers in 2005 and played a big role in the club's qualification for Europe the following year.

However, after breaking his leg in January last year, Savage was forced to undergo surgery on a knee injury this season, restricting his appearances for Blackburn.

Asked whether the Pride Park faithful will take to Savage after reports that some fans had voiced a protest against him joining the club, boss Jewell said he felt their opinion would change.

He is one of those characters you despise when he is playing for the opposition but you love when he is on your team

    Jewell on Savage

"I hated Robbie Savage when he played against me," Jewell admitted. "He is one of those characters you despise when he is playing for the opposition but you love when he is on your team.

"I know there is a little bit of history between Robbie and the Derby fans, but that is the same for him and every club - that is part of his nature.

"But if he comes and plays a part in turning this club around I'm sure the supporters will be delighted to see him in a Derby shirt.

"People do Robbie an injustice regarding his ability. You don't play at the top level for as long as he has, and also for your country, by only going around kicking people."

The savage move has me confused. I cant see a reason why he would choose Derby over Sunderland. At least with Sunderland he has a shot at being in the PL next season. Unless they were offering him atrocious wages, but I cant see why they would be.

Hehe I wonder if Derby fans remember that time Savage won a penalty for Leciester at Pride Park a few seasons back...after he got up he starting jeering the home fans behind the goal, celebrating the fact that he won the penalty and all before it had even been taken!

Derby looking at Roy Carroll and Sorensen...loadsa movement at the club - the great escape or throwing money around?
