Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Day turned to night at about 3.30pm and a squall brewed up, ye could hear the howling of the wind like something big was coming. After about 10 minutes or so it had passed, no precip from it at all, when it passed there was a clearing with sunshine coming through.

Full monthly summary with graphs will be available on Met Eireann Site probably later today.

    Following are extracts
Low pressure was the dominant influence on Ireland’s weather during most of January, with frequent deep
Atlantic depressions passing close to or over the country. Heavy rain and strong winds were recorded on
many days, while the predominantly southwesterly airstream kept temperatures above normal for much of
the month. Rainfall totals were above normal everywhere and it was a particularly wet month in parts of the
south and west. It was the wettest January for between 9 and 20 years in many places, while Shannon
Airport’s total of 221mm was its highest for January since the station opened in 1945. Between 16 and 25
wetdays (days with 1mm or more rainfall) were measured during the month; most of these were in the
period between the 4th and 23rd, when serious flooding developed in parts of the south and west. Mean
monthly air temperatures were between one and two degrees higher than normal, despite a spell of
relatively cold weather between the 3rd and 8th. There was a total of between 4 and 8 air frosts at inland
stations, compared with between 9 and 11 in an average January. Sunshine totals were below normal except
in the south and it was the dullest January for between 10 and 12 years at several stations.

    Wind and elements:
Mean windspeeds for the month were above normal generally, varying between 8 knots

    (14km/h)

at some inland stations and 18 knots (33km/h)at Malin Head. The highest gust, 91 knots (168km/h), was

measured at Malin Head just after midnight on the 9th; this was the highest gust at the station since December 1998
and the highest January gust there since 1968. There was thunderstorm activity, mainly in the south and west, in the
periods 3rd to 5th and 7th to 9th and on the 17th, 23rd, 24th and 31st. Hail showers were recorded in the periods 3rd
to 10th, 23rd to 24th and 29th to 31st, while snow was recorded between the 3rd and 9th and on the 23rd and 31st.

Fog was most widespread on the 4th, 11th/12th and 15th.

    Extreme values
    Rainfall

Just thought I would post up provisional temperature and rainfall figures for the month of January.

First of all, Met Eireann provisional figures suggest, with regards temperature, that although January 08 temperatures were, on average, 1.7°C above the 61-90 mean, it still turned out to be 0.3°C cooler, on average, than January 2007. This figure is derived from the overall Irish Januray Mean which consists of the 13 main official Synoptical Stations.

The official 1961/1999 overall January mean is 5.0°C
Overall January mean for 2007: 7.0°C
Overall January mean for 2008: 6.7°C

Here is January 2007/2008 temperature figures in chart form compared to the 61-90 mean:
    JanTempa.jpg

    January 2008 temperature overview in °C: (2008 Mean/61-90 mean)

    Belmullet 6.9/ 5.6
    Valentia 8.7/ 4.6
    Rosslare 7.6/ 4.6
    Shannon Airport 7.3/ 4.3
    Casement 6.5/ 4
    Malin Head 6.5/ 5.1
    Birr 6.4/ 5
    Clones 6.4/ 4.6
    Cork Airport 6.4/ 5.4
    Dublin Airport 6.4/ 4
    Claremorris 6.1/ 6.1
    Kilkenny 6.1/ 5.4
    Mullingar 5.7/ 6.8

With regards rainfall, most stations reported above average values. Considering that January 61-90 mean of the 13 stations combined is 103.5mm
the overall Jan mean for 2008 of 159.4mm, which makes it the wettest January since 1995, which had an overall mean total of 165mm. The wettest areas of the country seemed to be in the South-West and West with Valentia totals adding up to 274mm:

    Totals for January 2008:
      [
    LIST=1]
    [*]Valentia: 274
    [*]Shannon: 220.7
    [*]Cork: 193.1
    [*]Malin Head: 188.8
    [*]Claremorris: 179.2
    [*]Belmullet: 169.5
    [*]Clones: 150.2
    [*]Mullingar: 144.7
    [*]Kilkenny: 141.9
    [*]Casement: 111.1
    [*]Rosslare: 106.5
    [*]Dublin: 97.4
    [*]Birr: 95.6

    [/LIST]

In table form January 2008 rainfall totals can be seen for each station, and compared to Jan 2007 totals, as well as with the overall 61-90 mean total.

All the above figures are based on provisional data provided by Met Eireann and have yet to be adjusted, but will a good idea as to January 2008 shaped up, weatherwise for our green and sometimes pleasant land.
