That satistic is a bit simple don't you think. You need to compare the numbers of wolves vs the number of dogs in the world - there is much higher number of dogs then wolves. Also you will find dogs in pretty much ever part of the world but you won't find wolves. Elephants are the big killer in sri lanka

Also the contact dogs would have with humans is alot higher then wolves therefore the chances of them having an interaction resulting in someone being bitten or mauled is alot higher.

Also why limit this this to wolves vs dogs? why not include numbers for all members of that family like wild dogs, digos, bears and foxes? You might as well say the number of injuries caused by zebras is less then horoses.

I like wolves, they are beautiful animals but blanket statments like the one above are silly.

I'd like to reintroduce Wolves to the national parks, perhaps Glenveagh. Although I'm pretty vary of wolf-huggers in general.

Hi yes it would be lovely to reintroduce wolvesback in to the country but it will never happen not even in national parks they would suffer so much fro wolf haters they would be poisoned shot and trapped .I love wolves and have read up a lot about them .They are really nice animals but i cant see the public agreeing.

Chieftain is usually snow white :D but he does like to roll in essy things...

he's fabulous! where'd he come from?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

He was ceased together with his parents. I have rehomed the mother (white GSD) to the UK and placed the father in a wildlife park in Germany.

cool, whats his temperment like? does he differ in behviour much from ur other dogs? -sorry for the bundle of q's but i'm intrigued (don't worry, not in a i'm gonna start breeding hybrids way! lol)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

Chieftain is a permanent resident here, he is not up for rehoming and there are plenty of reasons for it. He is very vocal, ie full moon night, church bells, even my donkey braying will set him off on a howling marathon. He does not like a roof over his head, he is in a run and even there he sleeps out most nights as opposed to in his kennel. He is livestock aggressive. He likes to hunt. He is not very sociable with most dogs. He is extremely strong although he looks placid in the pics, he can take you grass surfing at a second's notice :D

although he's a tragic case, its very interesting stuff! how does he interact with other dogs?

WOW he looks brilliant. How is he around people, as in the people at your sanctuary? How did you find adapting to his different needs behavior? Is he very far away from the behavior of a domesticated dog? Sorry for all the questions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

I had no problems with adapting to him as he was about 4 months old when he came here and I have ALOT of socialising work put into him as he knew neither other dogs/animals nor was he that keen on humans. He is fine with other humans when I introduce him to them. He is quite keen on being petted and he's a licker, hands, face, whatever exposed skin he can reach :D. His behaviour differs as in he is very independent, always on the hunt, he slso show pacifying gestures which I have yet to see in dogs and I doubt I ever will. He is food aggressive with other peeps but not with me. And he is protective of his area with both dogs and peeps.

Thanks for the answers. He looks stunning.

thats very cool, those are exactly the differences i would've expected, it must be great to work with him!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

Tbh, I feel sorry for him, He is neither Wolf nor Dog. Half the time he doesn't know whether he is coming or going. I am a HUGE opponent to wolfhybrid breeding.

  • Registered Users Posts: 701 ✭✭✭Morganna

He really is lovely .I have Gsds .I knew someone in wales England that used to breed them they call them utonagans and some other name .They are definetly a specialist persons animal. They dont smell like dogs and have a desire to kill poultry etc.He is lovely looking mind you my Gsds howl at the moon !Good luck with him i can tell you are very capable .

  • Registered Users Posts: 410 ✭✭summer_ina_bowl

it really is tragic isn't it? he'll never gain the same satisfaction from human company etc as a dog. poor chap, does he get frustrated easily?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

I thought Utonagans are a man-made dog that has been selectively bred from the Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, and German Shepherd?

No, he doesn't. His run is strategically placed so he can see everything tha's going on :D. So he keep busy surveying his kingdom.

  • Registered Users Posts: 701 ✭✭✭Morganna

He really is nice.I knew a few people that used to breed Utonagans they have wolf blood in them.It would be very interesting to work with your fellah .I know the wolf doesnt have a smell to it like dogs do .I know they are keen to hunt the utonagans i hear go mad for poultry .I have German shepherds and they howl at the moon !I can see he is in capable hands and i wish you good luck with him .

I think all the birds in a 5 mile radius have their nests padded with Chief's hair...

    Chieftain the day he arrived:

And to be really bold, Chieftain can be sponsored:

Wow, cheiftan is stunning  it's kinda sad though that he must get a bit confused being half pet and half wild sort of. (I mean his breeding and maybe his instincts, not his personality now!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 128 ✭✭andrawolf

Huskies coats are like that once for dogs and twice for bitches. The birds around here have the warmest nest.:D I bought a brush called a dematter at a show . cost £30 but worth every penny. When I brush them I am covered from head to toe and I am eating hair all day.:D:D they are worth the work.:D

Breeding wolves and wolf hybrids was outlawed in the UK some time ago.I was suspicious of the practice of cross breeding(and violently ANTI the keeping of wild animals-particularly wild carnivores-as pets) but had no real opinions on it.Till now.
Thanks EGAR - looks like I've joined the anti brigade for that too.

    Hi EGAR,

He looks extremely strong. What age is he? Has he ever had any health problems, just a hunch but i would bet he would be very healthy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

He is four years old now. He has never been sick but look how he lives, always outdoors and even in rough weather prefers to sleep in the middle of the run. He is exetremely strong but can be very gentle unless the fancy of a chase takes him and than you hang onto the lead for dear life :D and I am used to walking Great Danes :D

I can recomend a good book called Never Cry Wolf its about a guy who lived amongst wolves very interesting think it was written by Farley moffat .I know wolves and wolf hybrids cant tolerate innoculations as in distemper hardpad etc .it can kill them in some instances.I dont agree with people breeding wolf hybrids either. What happened to the rest of the litter was he the only one ?Im so glad he is in good hands.
