Interesting indeed.

Actually a similar thing happened to me few years back, I was home in Damascus, while enjoying a nice afternoon walk with friends in the old city I saw a group of people looking like they've just leapt though a time machine. dressed in VERY old arabic clothes. after speaking to them, it turned out that they are Germans (a family of 12) who had converted into Islam and decided to learn Arabic and Islam in Damascus. they are still living in the old city and they spoke with a Damascene accent which was really surprising.
