Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi, hopefully someone with some knowledge of XP can help me here.
I'm getting a 100% cpu usage but not even running any apps!!

    It's a Dell Inspiron 1150 running XP.

Tried everything. Disk defrag/ccCleaner/Regcleaner. Sytem Restore wouldn't work.

Ran dss and got the following report:

    Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68
Run by NEARY on 2008-01-02 20:08:17
    Computer is in Normal Mode.

Total Physical Memory: 255 MiB (512 MiB recommended).

    Straight off:
    AntiSpywareBot, mmmm... ED: [ http://www.castlecops.com/s15060-AntiSpywareBot_exe.html ]

What anti-malware software are you using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

Open up task manager - Control-Alt-Delete and click Task Manager.

Then go to Processes and click on the CPU column twice (click on the actual word CPU). This will show you what process is consuming the most CPU.

Post it up and we will have a look.

On a side note - you can safely disable the following:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe

    The following look suspect:

    C:\Documents and Settings\NEARY\My Documents\dss.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXBCES.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXPPS.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bgsvcgen.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dla\tfswctrl.exe

I'm not saying they are bad, but I am saying I don't recognise them, so I would be a bit suspect of them.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXBCES.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXPPS.EXE

They look similar to Lexmark processes I had on my machine when I had a Lex printer. I have seen this in the past being a processor issue.

DSS.exe is presumably "Deckard's System Scanner".

tfswctrl.exe & bgsvcgen.exe are CD/DVD burning related... Could always be malware disguised. What are the file sizes for these and what CD/DVD software is included with the Dell?
Oh, yeah - post a screenshot of Task Manager as requested above.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXBCES.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXPPS.EXE
Usually Lexmark / "Dell" printer software, and can cause problems - check they're up to date. Temporarily prevent them from starting up:
Start -> run -> msconfig -> Startup Items - untick the above, reboot and see if there's a marked improvement. Selectively tick them again.
(This does not remove the software. It simply tells Windows not to load these items automatically on startup and it can be undone easily)

    Check task manager:

If the SYSTEM process is using up the CPU check to see if you've removed any USB devices recently. Epson , apple etc sometimes have software that scans for these devices contantly if they are not found on startup.

Nero 7 can use 100% CPU with its nero discovery utility. I rolled back to a previous version of nero and this was solved

get a copy of process explorer somewhere: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Cheers for all the replies guys.

Tried everything you have said so far and have seen a little improvment but still when I try to open a app the cpu shoots up to 100% again and very slow.

I'm down to about 34 processes running.

There are about 6 intances of 'svchost.exe' running. Anyone know what this is?

Also the processes seem to be flashing and jumping places a lot every second or so??

Will download process explorer when I get home and give it a go.

    Thanks again.

I might add, I'm not sure but all this seemed to start when I installed some kodak software that came with a digital photoframe a few weeks ago.

I wasn't impressed with it so decided to un-install it but it hung the laptop during the un-install so I had to re-boot. I cleaned up all the remaining related files when I got back in.

Could this botched un-install be what triggered the hassle?

svchost.exe is the process used by Windows to run services, (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services), you can find some info about it @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056.

Try opening your Task Manager, make sure you've included CPU and PID, click the CPU column so that you can see the processes using the most CPU at the top, and run your app.

If it turns out to be an instance of svchost.exe, you'll need to find out which services are running under that particular process ID. At the command prompt type: tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"

Should give you a list of all the svchost.exe instances, which services they are running and their process ID's so you can compare to Task Manager to see which one might be causing the issue.

Good luck, and upgrade the RAM, 256mb in this day and age *shakes head*

    :)

    C:\Documents and Settings\NEARY\My Documents\dss.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXBCES.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LEXPPS.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bgsvcgen.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dla\tfswctrl.exe

These are all legitimate programs, do not worry about them.

    :D I know. :D

The laptop is about 4 years old but was running fine (for what we use it for) up till a few weeks ago. Am looking into getting a new laptop at the moment. This grief is only speeding up the process.

Click: Start > Run . . and enter msconfig. Click the Startup tab and disable everything (un-check them). Restart and see if the problem goes away.
I've had a similar issue with Kodak Easy-Share slowing a powerful machine down to a crawl after installation. If that's still in the startup group disable it.

If this works then repeat the above but enable a couple at a time and reboot. Repeat until problem returns - you know what to do then.

Also another possibility, ctrl&alt&del > Task Manager. Is spool.exe there ? If so it's possible you have some documents waiting to be printed. Not sure where it is just now but there's a printer section in Control Panel - use this to see any documents waiting to be printed. I had a similar issue with a Dell laser printer that was configured incorrectly so the documents were queuing and consuming cycles.

Is Windows Defender trying to do a scan by any chance ? With such a low spec machine it could be enough to bring it to it's knees as well.

Kodak Easy share software can be a bit of a memory hog. if you think this started when you installed the kodak software, try uninstalling it. you can always reinstall later. I'd give it a go especially if the kodak software has any form of synchronisation or if it pops up automatically when you plug the photo frame in to the laptop.

you have been infected by a virus that infects svchost. Try google svchost +virus, or do a full virus scan, or make a ckean install.

He hasn't been infected by a virus that infects svchost.exe

You should really be more careful saying something like that, as some users could do a lot of damage trying to remove svchost.exe or any registry keys
