Myself and my girlfriend are heading over to Glasgow at the end of February for 2 nights for her birthday. We're flying into Prestwick and staying in Jurys Inn on Jamaica Street. As far as I know, it's very close to Glasgow train station. Is it?

Can anyone recommend anywhere to go i.e. romantic dinner, pubs and clubs for night time? Maybe go carting, amusements, museums or something else for during the day?

if your trip involves being there on a sunday- a trip the "barras" or the barrowland market-is worth considering-youll experience glasgow to the full -plenty of stalls etc and plenty of glasgow con men icon10.gificon10.gificon10.gificon10.gif

I lived in Glasgow for 8 years. Quality city.

Would totally recommend the barras market on a saturday or sunday monring. Great buzz about the place. Despite it being full of con artists, it's totally safe.Full of cops! I used to love strolling around it. Will be full of tourists.

For dinners, one of the best restaurants in the city is a chinese place called Chow. It's on byres road. Any taxi driver will know it. Alternatively, you can just get the underground to Hillhead underground station, and turn left when u walk out. It's a few hundred yards up the road.

If you want amazing food in a small cafe, go to my favourite eating spot in the whole of Glasgow (actually in the whole world!). It's a medditeranean restaurant called "seb's" on the old dumbarton road. You'd prob need to get a taxi to find it. Will cot you about 4 quid from jamaica street. It's at the end of dumbarton road right beside the kids hospital.

Here's a review of the place

    http://www.skinnymag.co.uk/content/view/1141/133/

I sound like I have shares in it, but I don't. It's just so amazing. Great for lunch or dinner. Try the chicken pate+salsa panini, or the mixed grill. Oh, or the meatballs. Totally amazing.

NIghtlife is kinda variable. If you're looking for somewhere a bit "nice" to bring her, try "oran mor" on byres road.

it's a pub, which also does great food. They also have a great nightclub too. it's where the posher element go in Glasgow, so it's always a safe bet to avoid a bottling :P

If you want to stay in town for clubbing, go to a club called "blanket" on sauchihall street. It's a nice place too. Or go to the art school, if you like it alternative.

Jamaica street is very close to central station. So you cold take the train to Edinburgh for the day. takes about 50 minutes, and they leave a few times every hour.

You asked about museums...best museum by far in Glasgow is the kelvingrove art gallery. amazing place, and just recently refurbished. Then go across the road to the transport museum. There's also a lovely pub/restaurant directly across the road from it. Can't remember the name of it, but it's just outside the kelvingrove gallery, across the road, and slighty to your right on the corner. You'll see it straight away. they advertise gourmet food and beer.

Also, when you leave the art gallery, you're within spitting distance of what is said to be Glasgow's best indian restaurant. I've never been in it, and can't remember what it's called :P But, you walk out the door of the gallery, and corss the road tot he bus stop. walk left and it's the 1st indian you come to, it's like a 1 or 2 minute walk. there will be a Q outside on a friday or sat night.

Hope that helps. if you have any more questions, drop me a PM and I'll be happy to help.

I like Glasgow. Went to Goma (Gallery of modern art) while there last time to kill a bit of time.

In terms of night life Nice N Sleazies is always great and has a cool jukebox menu but price of drink is no better than at home. Go to a few other spots down that road - Sauciehall street, for promotions and cheaper beers. Can't think of the name of one place (firehouse or something stupid - across the road from ABC venue) but they host an Antics night and have cheap drinks.
King Tuts is another option, might be another good gig on while you're there too.

Glasgow school of art has a club but when I was there we queued for ages to get in and I had to blag our way in after an hour in the freezing cold cause we had no official ID. It's a bit of a dive and I don't remember much of the night once I got in.

It's easy to dismiss Glasgow as a dive as it not as pretty as Edinburgh and has alot of social problems but it has some interesting buildings(Glasgow School of Art) and it's music and art scene are miles better than Edinburgh. Any night of the week you can go see quality live music in Kings Tuts or downstairs in Nice N sleazys or in The Arches under the Railway station fairly cheaply too and there is loads of different club nights on in hip hop/techno/funk/soul whatever you are into. Check out the local guide called The List for club guides and upcoming local gigs.

I would recommend visiting GOMA( Glasgow Museum of Modern Art) and Kelvingrove Art Gallery in the West End. you could spend the day in the Kelvingrove museum, loads of stuff in that museum. Sauchiehall St, Argyle St and Buchanan St in the city centre are good for shopping. Dumbarton Road and Byres Road in the West End have some nice boutique shops.

you should go see the Necroplis in the East End, stunning views of the city from there as well:

Glasgow Green is also worth checking out in the East End as well. Glasgow University grounds is very nice and Kelvingrove Museum is nearby. Kelvingrove Park in the West End is great for a stroll on a lazy sunday.

Going to there for an evening and a day with my Dad next week, so not really looking for clubs. I'm 21 and we both love history. I'm vegetarian and he's a not very adventurous old fashioned steak and two veg eater, so somewhere tasty that would suit both palettes would be great.

We don't know the city at all so places fairly easy to get to. We'd be there on a Thursday and Friday.

Any recommendations of cheap hotels and b&b's would be appreciated too, thank you!

I wouldnt call Glasgow a romantic city or maybe i just hang out with a bad crowd :D.

Pearl India restaurant is fantastic, i always go there when im over, mince nan bread, chicken pakora mmmmmmmmm. Feck it im hungry now.
A tour of Parkhead is good if yer into soccer (do not wear a soccer jersey out), the shopping is deadly (apparently), the mrs always fills the suitcases anyway.
Rockers is a great wee venue for rock bands, nice n sleazy was recommended but the one night i went in it was a gay night , bit of a shock to a sheltered man like me, outback bar is good if youre into the dancy thing (dunno if its still goin or not).

Have fun, its a great city for the craic.

Heading over here at the start if March for the weekend with the OH. Going to look into the previous posts but looking for a a bit more up to date information. We are mid twenties, so nightlife, fun or unusual activities and maybe a veggie restaurant if its not asking too much.
