Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

From the EPL, I would have picked players like Shearer, Owen, Sheringham, Berbatov, Drogba and Andy Cole.I reckon they were all top class finishers.

Andy Cole got goals but he missed an awful lot of chances
wouldn't class him as a great finisher

His goal to games ratio is just insane when you look at it.

    Club....................Apps.......Goals
    Cruzeiro...............13............12

    FC Barcelona........37.............32
    Internazionale.......69............49
    Real Madrid.........127............83
    A.C. Milan...........14..............7
    Brazil..................97.............62

    Best player ever :)

Imagine him if he stayed injury free... Itd be frightening.

Eduardo once again shows his finishing ability. It just looks so easy.

Those Ronaldo stats are incredible, and to think Madrid fans used to give him stick

IMO i think its Eduardo in the premier league anyway..based on today..he's just a cool finisher.its basically someone when they get the chance you would bet your house they would score..like henry/rooney/drogba in a one on one situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    Ruud's record:
    Games-Goals

    FC Den Bosch- 69 - 17 = 0.26
    SC Heerenveen - 31 - 13 = 0.41
    PSV - 67 - 62 = 0.92
    United - 140 - 95 = 0.67
    Real Madrid - 52 - 33 = 0.63
    Holland - 59 - 30 = 0.51
    That is unreal

wouldnt put the contents of the coins section of my wallet on rooney to score from any situation to be perfectly honest

a great finisher he is most certainly not

Ronaldo has everything. Pity he never won the CL and had a big injury. If he never got that injury he may have been the best player ever to play the game.

Fowler is definitely the best finisher ive ever seen, RVN not far behind him.

As has been said, a good finisher is someone who you just know is going to score in a one on one situation. They know just what to do, can keep a calm head, and are always in the right place.

Shearer was absolutely lethal in front of goal, especially in his prime, circa 94-97. His finishing was second to none back then. His games/goal ratio at Blackburn and his first season at Newcastle is extraordinary.

At club level he scored of 379 goals in 733 games.

Add to that 30 goals in 60 caps for England.

    Club Record (League):
    Southampton
    118 games 23 goals
    Blackburn Rovers
    138 games 112 goals
    Newcastle United
    303 games 148 goals

    Club Record (Total):
    Southampton
    158 games 43 goals
    Blackburn Rovers
    171 games 130 goals
    Newcastle United
    404 games 206 goals

The best/most natural finisher I've ever seen is still Romario. He makes Fowler, Rooney, Drogba and co. look distinctly ordinary.

    second to 1, robbie fowler

id also have rvn ahead of shearer, but shearer in 3rd

What do people reckon of Bergkamp as a finisher? Does the ability to score goals from unlikely situations come into it or is that another, distinct attribute?

if shearer is getting a look in than David Hirst has to be included.
Injury robbed him of some vital years. english soccer could have been different with himself and shearer playing for the national team.

    Years Club App (Gls)*
    1985-1986 Barnsley 28 (9)
    1986-1997 Sheffield Wednesday 294 (106)
    1997-1999 Southampton 30 (9)

    Career total 352 (124)

    1991-1992 England 3 (1)
    1991-1992 England B 3 (2)

now to be honest i dont think Hirst and Shearer are really clinical finishers when you compare them to Romario or Ronaldo who for me are lethal - but they are certainly 2 excellent all round footballers. Hirst could shoot on his right and left and could head the ball.

    Gary Linekar anybody?

have to agree with Kinaldo about Romario. the man knew nowt but to score goals

    The Goat -

Games / Goals / goals per game

    League 470 (89) 221 0.39

    FA Cup 28 (6) 18 0.52

    League Cup 37 (5) 16 0.38

    Other 17 (6) 5 0.21

Plus 32 goals in 36 games for Bermuda. A legend who did it at all league levels.

What the helll are people on about here?

Goals per game is nonsense in this regard.

What you really need to do is compare shots per goal.

I'm guessing RVN would win that vrs anyone.

Well in that reagrd John O'Shea was the best finisher in the premership last year. With an 66% strike rate with 4 goals from 6 shots.

So "finishing" takes things like positional sense, composure, etc. into account?

    afraid not

paul robinson had a 100% strike rate

Pre-Chelski, when he was at a team that actually played football, Shevchenko was one of, if not the best finishers in the world.

Argue with me all you like about how he's been poor for chelsea, but you put him back in the Milan team and I guarentee he would finish the season with 15 goals easy.

Robinson tries to shoot from every kick-out. He really needs to vary that kick it as hard as he can technique! :D
