The wording on the website says that the votes will "help" to pick the winner, not directly decide the winner. So, as far as i can see, what the voting people are really doing is not deciding the winner, but taking part in a competition also; one where, if they are correct in choosing one of the top three images, they can win a digital camera also.

Dave, am I right or wrong here?

Neither :) One very important thing to remember about competitions is that the judges can never fully remove their own likes/dislikes from the equation. I think it's fairly clear that there are about 6 real contenders for the top 3 prizes so the (honest) votes of people is a real help in coming to a decision which is as close to the best one possible.

The votes have been a genuine help, but they won't be the only decider,

    Dave

    Ok clear as mud!!! :)

I am glad the voting wasn't done using a premium rate phone number!!!

Also, I think if you're having further comps the entrants names shouldn't be in the title.
X-Factor type voting just requires a file name :)

Due to the amount of Admin involved, and the fact that our site is just a plain HTML one (I do it by hand in Dreamweaver), it was always going to be easier to keep the photographers name in the file name.

This is our first competition (and it won't be our last!!) and we've learnt an awful lot from it. Getting some sort of back-end system that would only allow single voting from a particular network address would help.

We do plan to upgrade the site to a content managed one over the next few months, so maybe we can include these modifications as well,

    Dave

Hmm but with that you lose all the ones that people send from a proxy based system like our college for example - everyone has the same TCD IP address when connected to their network.

Hmm, thanks for that. Nothing is ever as easy as seems!! I'll bear that in mind. Anyone know of Web Developers that could handle something like this?

This is going on so long, with the T&C's long since thrown out the window, it's beginning to rival the Halifax comp for ineptitude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

How has the T&Cs been thrown out the window?

It has taken quite a while for the winner to be decided though... I wouldn't call it ineptitude. Hopefully Dave will be able to tell us what's going on soon.

Thanks for all your patience. I'm ready to announce the winners, but I also want to tie it in with something special ;) This "other" thing is taking a bit longer to co-ordinate, but I think will really be the icing on the cake.

All will be revealed this afternoon,

    Dave

Slightly off topic, but I used to work in a place which delivered paving slabs and the like and they often told customers the delivery would arrive "mid-morning"
I enquired as to what hours "mid-morning" was and was told "any time between 10am and 2:30pm"

We could be in for quite a wait!

    RUp-DeirdreGalbraith-1.jpg

Congratulations to the winners and to all who entered. The winners will be notified directly over the next few days.

The bit I was holding out for is the Awards Ceremony that I was determined to hold. We are very short of Photographic Events in Ireland so Spectra Photo and I have agreed to put on a bit of a bash in their Grafton St Store. Due to pressure of space this will be on a first come first served basis. Booking will be through the Digital Beginners website from Wednesday.

I'm rushing off to teach my Maynooth Photography courses at the mo' but I'll expand on the awards ceremony tomorrow,

    Dave

I remember reading about that winning photo on here, didn't that guy get off a bus to take that photo or something?!

All good, I really like the temple bar runner up as well.

Is it silly to wonder if the first one isn't posed? Her legs are the same as the statue but her hands aren't...

Well done and well deserved Covey.

Anyone who attended the Boards talk recently would have heard the story to go with the image.

Well done to everyone who entered.

There be a story I missin'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Yep, Covey's story and his photo. Not my place to say any more. It's a good story though.

    A deserved winner, for sure.

All worthy winners and great examples of street photography. The winning shot stood out for me from the very start so I'm delighted to see it made it all the way. I haven't heard the story behind it, but I think it works well without knowing the story. It's a moment well spotted and cleverly captured. It's interesting that the majority of the winners (and entries for that matter) are black and white.

Wow two boardsies in the top 3 :) Well done!

I noticed no. 2 on the website as well, think that's a cracking shot. Can't shoot street stuff but like to see a bit now and again...

There's loads of it being offered over on creativeireland photo a day thread and to be honest I think it's a case of the emperor's new clothes, or maybe I'm just blind. Don't get it. Would someone care to enlighten me?

to me its everything in photography , capturing slices of reality , making the mundane look interesting -- the king of photography , Cartier, was the maestro -- strokes for folks i guess

Thanks all and especially Spectra and Digital Beginners.

Lot of good shots there and congrats to all. Good to see someone from outside Dublin up there as well.

No big story re. the image, just that I saw it from near the GPO and put my life in my hands crossing 4 lanes of buses and taxis on O'Connell St. It's a busy spot at North Earl St. and I had to wait about 2 minutes before I got a shot with no one else in the frame. Amazing she stayed that long like that.

It was not posed but maybe some kind of compliment you think it might be:D

Like Barry, I love Street Photography and the like though I can appreciate why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

It's the "making it look interesting" bit I'm not getting, if you look at the examples from creativeireland you might see what I mean - don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising you or f64, f64 is one of the best photographers in Ireland, I just don't get the thing he's doing at the moment.

For street photography, this is the only stuff I've seen recently that I find interesting:

Unfortunately can't access the site here at work:rolleyes:

I agree with you in general though, it's the making interesting thats the key. You see a lot of photos of street scenes and thats all it is. Every street scene does not deserve a photo and the good ones are worked at like any other genre. They don't come easy:p

    T.

Mattstuart , some good stuff there indeeed.
