This has now been resolved. Thanks everyone for your help.

In particular I would like to thank Spiral Hosting (CoNfOuNd) for discovering the problem is port 53 related, and Blacknight (flamegrill) for confirming the problem and the required fix (and for his help discovering a couple of other unrelated problems...)
