Thinking of holidaying in Canada this year and will hopefully hire a car. Do I need a special licence for this? I had a Canadian licence many years ago but it's long since expired. Will I have to get an international driving licence and any idea of the cost?

You don't need an international driving licence in a English speaking country, an international driving licence is basically a translation of your Irish driving licence. You will need a full driving licence.
