The surgeon was meant to come down today but there was an emergency so Hexx didn't get a chance to speak to him but the little 'un is still second on the list tomorrow for her operation so, assuming it goes ahead, it'll be about 1/2pm.

Good luck to you all,you have the exact time slot as us we were second on this list last Friday. This is good news as I was talking to the surgeon last week and he said they do two a day and its normally one complicated one and one more straight forward one, they do the complicated one first and the straight forward one second.

I hope it all goes well.

I know the last thing on your mind will be to let us know how she got on, but we will all be waiting to hear. I can safely say, you and hexx and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi, I'm sure it will be just fine.
My daughter had the operation in September 2006 in Crumlin. However she had been premature and was born when I was just under five and a half months pregnant. Anyway she was still two and half months off her due date and probably weighed about one and a half pounds when she had the procedure to help her breathing. It went really well, they transferred her back to Holles Street the next day and her breathing improved rapidly from day one.

Now she is seventeen months old or thirteen months corrected and is doing fantastically well.

Anyway maybe you will feel a bit less stressed now.All the best.

Sorry, I just read the post where you said she was having heart surgery and not just the PDA. I should have read all of the posts first. I really hope it goes ok tomorrow.

Bad news again, the operation might not be going ahead. Hexx just rang me and the baby has thrush all down her throat and they won't be able to operate if she has an infection. It depends what the surgeon says tomorrow but it's not looking good 089.gif

I'm very sorry to hear that, you must both be so stressed already. Fingers crossed everything will work out and Sarah'll be able to have the procedure asap.

    Sorry to hear that :(

At least you know they're not going to rush it or go ahead with it if the wee pet isn't 110% fit for it..

Thinking of you, she's a dote!

Hi guys, the operation was a complete success, she was meant to be down there for 4 hours (1 1/2 hours to prep with all the iv's, central line in neck etc. Then the surgeon comes in and does the actual surgery then they stitch her back up) but and hour and 40 minutes later we got the call to say she was finished. She was meant to be moved to the ICU 20 minutes after the call but we had to wait around for 2 hours before she was brought down which, as you can imaging, was the longest 2 hours of our lives. I wasn't allowed into the ICU (only parents are allowed in and I'm not seen as a parent whereas the useless fcuk that left the day she was born is and got to see her but thats neither here nor there right now) but Hexx told me she was already looking better. Before the op she use to breath in really fast spasms because blood was leaking into her lungs and she was slowly drowning, from what I understood of the condition, but now it's slow and regular.

At the moment she's connect to a ventilator, chest drain, morphene (but they are changing that to epidural asap) she has a feeding tube, two central lines, two canulas in her feet and various other tubes (Hexx said 11 in all) but she's sedated (because she kept trying to pull the ventilator off in her sleep, thats my girl 081.gif) and peaceful. We headed home after Hexx seen her because even Hexx's access to the ICU is ristricted for the night to help her recovery because they want to keep her settled so no-one is allowed in to see her now until 9.30 tomorrow so we decided another night looking at the four walls of the parents accomodation was a no-no, at last we can breath again so we'd rather do it at home. A part that made me giggle was that she will be on Viagra (yes Viagra! 081.gif) to keep her pulmunary pressure down for about 4 months but, still being pre-op, I was warned by Hexx that I'm not allowed experiment with her medication even for scientific purposes :D

We just want to thank you all lots for all the support and well wishes 058.gif, it really did mean alot to us to know there was so many people rooting for her and we know now that we'll soon have a happy, healthy baby coming home who'll finally be able to put on weight so she won't be so tiny anymore :D

Not sure if I can post this here but I figured if people can post relationship type threads to get some support this might be OK too since I post here alot. As you all know I date a girl (Hexx) and Hexx has two daughters from her ex-marriage. One is 5 and one is 8 months and has Down syndrome. The father left the day the baby was born mainly because he was embarrassed about her (it was obviously a hit to his manhood to have a DS child  ) but that's not what this thread is about.

The baby has a thing called a PDA and it basically means she has a hole between her heart and lungs and blood is slowly filling her lungs. For months now we've been trying to get her weight up so that she'd be strong enough for the operation to seal the hole (she's eight months and is still only 10 pounds which anyone who has kids will tell you is tiny for her age) but Friday we got the go ahead for the operation. She went in today and Hex is there with her now(I couldn't stay because I have an appointment about my hormones tomorrow that takes 3 months to get and if I don't go I won't get my next hormone prescription or another appointment for another 3 months so Hexx sent me home so I'm up bright and early :D ). They've been doing tests all day and I'm just back from the hospital an hour and Hexx just rang me to say that the operation is going ahead tomorrow afternoon so I'm hoping to get there in time to be there for both of them. The operation is pretty non invasive because all they do is inject a Cathather (sp?) into an artary in her groin and feed it to her heart and when it gets to the hole expand a tiny balloon that plugs the hole, afterwards her quality of life will greatly improve because at the moment she finds it hard to feed because she can't breath and eat at the same time so after this she'll be able to put on real weight. The biggest worry right now is how she'll react to the anysthetic which is why she needed to be over 10 pounds before they'd even consider it but finger crossed it'll all be fine. Sorry for posting it here but when you're sitting on your own worrying and it's on your mind you need to get it out.

    You are a good guy.

I know this may sound harsh, but alot of men wouldnt take on a relationship with such extra complications

I really hope this woman appreciates you for your support and i hope all goes well for you.

Im not a religious man of one of any faith but i believe in Karma, but i guarentee you will have a content life after all the worrying is over. DS ppl are in ways no different that the rest of us, and are very affectionate and i know he appreciates you.

Take care. And all the best :)

I'm not a guy and the baby's a girl but thanks hon :D, Sarah was never a complication, I feel proud to have a DS daughter in my life (she's not my biological daughter but I am her other parent) because before her I never understood the condition but now I see how wrong my perceptions were of what it'd be like to have a DS child. She's my little 059.gif and I love her unconditionally, I'm so proud of her right now for getting through this :D

Delighted for you Kaz-I was looking earlier in the day for updates. The little one will go from strength to strength. A friend of mine's grand-daughter had much the same surgery and is a bouncing 14 month old now. Those surgeons are unbelievable in their skill. Happy days for you now!
