    Hi,

I am coming down to Limerick from Sligo for the weekend. I have some business to do and I decided to take advantage of cheap hotel rates, last minute job. Can anybody reccomend any good pubs or restauarants. Are there any must see sights or things to.

How safe are the streets, my wife is very nervous
    Thanks.

Limerick city is safe enough. It's a city, so take the usual precautions (i.e. don't be stupid and invite trouble), otherwise you don't have anything to worry about.

Says a lot about Limerick's image that the discussion immediately turns to whether it's safe. :(

Happily the reality is much better than the image... always enjoyed any nights out I spent in the city.

Yeah city centre is grand, where are ye staying? if it's in the city there's loads of restaurants and pubs, if it's outside the city, then what area are ye stayin in for better advice, or noplace in the city should really be more than a €10 cab ride to town.

I am staying on O Connell St. Is that where the action is?

The safety issue doesnt really concern me, I guess I have been in much meaner towns that Limerick and done some really silly things and come out alive, its the wfe thinks shes gonna be shot or something. I told her she was silly.

Yeah seriously, its all just media hype. Limerick is grand, I lived there for years and really enjoyed it, never spotted trouble. Anyway if you're on O'Connell St. you're sorted because everything is close to that. Try the Jasmin Palace if you're into Chinese. As for pubs and stuff, ask your hotel receptionist to point you towards Dolans Warehouse, there's usually a good band in there and the pub usually has trad if you're into that.

I like a pub with a Victorian air, brown wood that kind of thing. I am wee bit too old to be too sardined up.

Is there a vietnamese in CC?

Brown wood and Victorian....The White House on O'Connell Street is good, as would be the bank for the same thing in a more modern vain.

There isn't a Vietnamese, but there is an Indian if that's any good. The Mogul Emperor on Henry Street.

Avoid O'Grady's unless you've hours to waste waiting. 7 of us went for lunch today and we were late back for work because it was 1:45 before the last of the food arrived.....we'd arrived at quarter past and ordered just after half past. The food was good though...reasonable.

Avoid Luigi Malones....you/'re basically paying the insurance cost of having a full length glass window and the food ain't the best.

Milano on the waterfront do great Italian....the tagliatele is a favourite of mine.

Texas Steakout do the Mexican thing, inchiladas, tortillas and a great fillet steak, the other steaks are only okay, fillet if you like it done rare is the best around.

Market Square Brassarie is expensive, but the food is excellent. Nice lamb shank if a little sparse sometimes.
If you go there it's also close to Souths Pub of Angelas Ashes fame which is done up very nicely!

Hope ye have an enjoyable weekend.

God I hope your joking Souths isn't a patch on the old pub. I mean the crassness of calling the loo's Frank and Angela. Destruction of the only mid pub snugs in the city.

Go to the white house much nicer altogether.

Tom Collins still has a snug, and is near O'Connell St.

Brulees on Henry st is supposedly great, and Freddies Bistro on Theatre Lane is great, their early bird menu is fantastic value, imo.

Dolans is a good choice of pub, it'll be busy but it won't be mental.

Harrisons pub I think would suit you. Down by the dock road, near peter clohessys pub

Harris's bar I presume you mean...............Doesn't have much of the Victoian thing happening......

Don't like what they have done to Souths.

Myles Breens is just off of O'Connell St. is a nice pub with friendly atmosphere.

Have to agree the White House is another good option.
Venture over Sarsfield Bridge for an afternoon pint to the Curragower Bar (near the Treaty Stone) you won't find a nicer pint with a great view of the river and the castle.

It's also HEC rugby weekend (Munster play in France on Sunday) so the pubs will have a good atmosphere if you're still around on Sunday for the game.

Yeah, it's a nice enough place alright. Is it busy at the weekends? How about Bentley's? Seems to get an "older" crowd?

Fennessey's on new street sounds right up your alley also

I'll pitch in and recommend either the White House or Tom Collins; if you want a nice pint of Guinness and an old fashioned pub, it's just the job!

i dont mean to get personal but what kind of woman thinks she's going to get shot walking down the road
this isnt Compton you know, and if i wasnt so thick skinned i would find it highly offensive

just for that i'm gonna hang around all the hotels on O Connell street and mug every woman that comes out of the George yeah.gif

The steering wheel in Roxboro is a lovely pub and near it is the sportsmans inn near O'Malley park, guaranteed to entertain and great atmos. You and the missus would love it, I promise!

Myles Breens on Shannon St just around the corner from The George hotel.

Tom Collins is a nice old fashioned pub usually full of arty farty types or the gay community.

White House would be a nice spot.

Lads, why are ye running Limerick down by recommending pubs up by Southill etc. The guy wants something to do in Limerick and the usual bunch of "everything's wrong with Limerick" clowns jump about trying to ensure he sees the bad side of the city.

Totally agree. They have managed to make a mess of what was a great pub.I've only been there once since they did it up and wouldn't be quick to go back. Also agree about the White House.Often go there for some nice quiet drinks and you can also hear the people you are talking to.

Before any smart-asses comment it's not the drinks that are loud in other places.

Wow, this guy wants to go out for a weekend in Limerick and you recommend one of the roughest local pubs in one of the roughest areas and then you feign offence?

Are you even old enough to get served in pubs? If a mate was going out in Dublin would you direct him to the city centre or recommend some dive of a place outside town?

Will Ineed to get a cab to the Sportsmans?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

Have never heard of the Sportsman's bar however the steering wheel has had major work done on it in recent years.

It doesn't fit what the OP is looking for though. You are more likely to find georgian bars than victorian in Limerick anyway. The Bank is probably the closest one i can think of.

I believe that particular poster was being faciscious....never even heard of the place.

Is he not on about The Olympic Arms/The Galvone just as you enter Southill?

  • Registered Users Posts: 972 ✭✭✭redarmyblues

We had a great time, we stayed in the George Hotel. Visted the White House Myles Breens among others. We ate in Azure (Food ok, but pricey) and the Cellar (I think) and we gambled a little in Fitzpatricks Casino.

We will be back again, thanks to all the positive people who gave help and advice.
