“ Some day, I suppose it's possible for someone to be a better no limit holdem player than me. I doubt it, but it could happen. But, I swear to you, I don't see how anyone could ever play gin better than me.

    Stu Ungar for me too.

Although this quote sounds very Hellmuthian.

    lol

ok fair enough you cant deny his legacy but i still wouldnt consider him one of the best ever. the fields were much smaller, he was never considered a good cash player and players are much more educated/better these days anyway. he was obviously talented but i think there's a good chance he was just one of the first to play lag while everyone else was still weak tight and struggled to adapt. that's just my 2 cents anyway.

I'm pretty sure that he sucked out with lesser aces in two of the final hands (one against Doyle and one where the final table was outside?), notwithstanding the myth that he called his opponents hands in two of those wins (he definitely did not do this as I've watched the other victory too). People also go on about the legend call of a $50,000 with 8 high when he correctly put the other guy on a busted straight draw, but I wonder how many times he made such calls and was wrong.

Doubtless he was an outstanding player but I wonder how much his legend benefits from our love of people who burn out rather than fade away.

He had the worse ace and a gutshot in his last win, along with a huge chip lead. He hit a gutshot against Doyle, and the money went in after, and his other win he went all in with overs and a flush draw against a fairly dominated straight draw iirc. Going by his tournament record alone as footage is limited you can't deny he had immense talent, and he was only regarded as a cash game fish towards the end of his career when he was f-cked and his tournament record suffered badly too. So to say he was never considered a good cash game player is simply incorrect.

He won, not cashed, won 1/3 of 30 odd major tournaments he played in and has something like 5 bracelets, 3 me wins, and won 3 superbowl of pokers too (nobody else even won one of each). It also helps that I just reread his autobiography :)

What has happened to this forum? Back in the day you would be ripped apart for posting such a "woman's own" type of question. I'm going to tune into the Gods now and ask them who really was the best poker player....Naw don't believe them. Can't be Humberto.

    Next up:-

Who is the worst player in the world?
    List your top 5 hands?
What is your favorite suit in the deck?
Where was that After Hours forum again?

I'm really suprised too. When I saw this thread growing, I was sure I'd get to bring out my ban stick, sadly I haven't been able to yet, although denashpot is getting close with his idiot comment, (denashpot, FYI, it's generally not a good idea to call an ex-mod of this forum an idiot ) ....

Seriously, what has this forum come too, even RT was pretty nice... FFS this is January and everyone is on their best behaviour??

Anyway continue, but please no-one start any of Muso's other suggestions.

I'm the Cowboy, Paul Margaritas. Some people say I'm a Las Vegas icon. Don't Worry, folks. I've been around this town when Benny first came 'round. Them days, we was prospecting. My biggest bankroll was $2 Million. With my Master's Degree in Chemistry, I turned that to ****. But I ain't quittin. I give poker lessons for $10 an hour. Just a few lessons with me and you'll be on your way to a life of pain and heartache.

There's nothing wrong with the thread, Muso was just pointing out that in the past a thread like this would see the original poster (OP) slagged no end and basically just become a troll fest, and this person would invariably get frustrated and explode after enough goading, before I was a mod it was actually fun sometimes to see it happen, but for some reason everyone has shown a level of restraint not witnessed before. So basically it was strange to see a semi coherent discussion about who the best player in the world is. (the main reason is, it's impossible to say who the best is, and usually the usual Celeb Poker players get bandied around, and TBH, most of them are actually pretty crap, and it's impossible to measure because the game has changed so much over the years).

Also feel free to speak your mind in the forum, but the Golden rule is, "attack the post, not the poster". So rep people's points apart piece by piece if you choose, but there's no name calling or things like your idiot remark allowed. I'd suggest you read the Poker forum charter (a sticky in this forum) for the rules.

I would like to correct Ste on one point. It is not generally accepted to call anyone an idiot here, not just an ex-mod of this forum. Occasionally someone deserves it and that's all grand, but usually it is not a constructive thing to say, and can lead to a warning (take this as yours denahspot) and potentially a temp ban if done agin. We may all be a bunch od idiots here but we like to try and keep it somewhat civilised most of the time.

I too though 'oh no, here we go' when I saw this thread, but it started off on a good note and carried on surprisingly. It'd be a shame to ruin that now.

I had my post half written when I had to go to a meeting (yay!) and finished and posted when I cam back. When I started writing it, it was before you posted the updated 'abuse the post, not the poster' thing, but by the time I had finished due to the meeting, it was after you had posted that. We'll call it a draw.

Ian Beal is a much better player than he was ever given credit for.
Whenever he had his tash he was the best cash player the world has ever seen.
He gained his skills from watching his father Pete (R.I.P.) play in the cafe with that dodgy Turkish looking fellow.
