Now this is a hypothetic case, I am not intending to do this but recent discussion made me curious about it:

What is the exact penalty for not registering a car within 24 hours of arrival? Assuming that it's taxed (say, in the UK) and insured, what happens if you are caught driving it? Can Gardai and or Customs Officer confiscate the car? In that case what happens then? What will you have to do?

Presumably pay the outstanding VRT and Motor Tax and daily storage fees.

Is that all? Are you not going to be penalised for breaking the law continously since you imported it (for example 2 months prior to being caught?)

It can be impounded for up to 30 days, you will be charged the VRT and also a fine, so what you think you saved by not VRTing it at the start you will probably loose out in the long run

It's a measure state agencies like the cops and revenue can resort to to take unregistered, unroadworthy, untaxed and uninsured cars of the road. They basicly take the car out of circulation and store it in a supposedly safe compound until you rectify the situation or undertake to get it repaired. The car will be released to you then after you've paid the storage fee as well. If you leave the car sitting there for too long ( don't know exactly how long ) you might lose ownership.

does anyone know where I can find exact legislations in relation to that? how are the fines calculated?

If it is siezed for non payment of vrt there is no storage fee, you are only charged storage fee for the other things like no tax, insurance etc
