Hi, I was wondering could anyone give me their views on this. I thought about doing a home study course through the NTA for basic accounting to test the water and see if this career was for me. I'm told I would receive a DLAC Accredited Qualification. Any thoughts?
PS, I work full time on rotating shifts so a home study course would have to be my choice.

    What is the NTA?

I think you shuold do something recognised by one of the accounting institutes. You can do the accountant technician (IATI) course by home study.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Could you recommend who to do the course through. Are some institutes better than others? And maybe how long the course would take. I did read somewhere something about needing to do two years work experience,is this true?
I am in full time employment, I received qualifications for a trade but it would not be any use to this.

    Hi

I lecture in tax for IATI, and none of the students are on training contracts or anything like that. They all work in varying careers, and the age group is very mixed too. Small class size too, which is good.

I think it's a good introductory course, the standard is reasonably high but it is only a two year commitment, unlike ACA, which is anything from 3.5 to 5 years, and ACA also requires you to undertake a training contract with a firm.

If this sounds good, you should go to www.iati.ie, and take a look at sylabbi and old exam papers.

CPA is another good course which may interest you too!
