my tracert reveals a strange hop

    i was wondering for ages why my ping was so high, so tonight i did a tracert to eircom.net

    ...anyway, the hop shows that i am routed to www.ripe.net(83.71.114.145) in the netherlands first, what the hell is this? No wonder my ping is so high. What can i do to get rid of it.

    it says amsterdam if i do a whois ip search...

    With my NTL connection I've seen stuff being routed via Amsterdam and Paris, to IP addresses which are in Dublin within 5km of me.

    EDIT: I don't seem to be able to run a tracert at all now. Request Timed out and connection seems fine. Are NTL blocking I wonder.
