just wondering what is the problem with Sky BB in Ireland?
Is the internet connection via the satellite dish or does it actually need a separate connection the same way as ,say eircom broadband or cable?

Sky bought LLU player Easynet a while back and use LLU in the UK for braodband. LLU in the UK is an easier task due to the number of lines per exchange in population centres. LLU in Ireland is very difficult for lots of reasons therefore difficult business case for Sky (or anyone). So no they dont use satellite, they use phone lines.

Sky don't offer broadband services in Ireland, for the reasons pointed out by crawler. A big thankyou to eircom and Comreg once again  If LLU worked properly here then they could, like they do in Britain.

Yes, there's no money in dsl broadband in Ireland (for anyone but Eircom). Eircoms LLU prcies are way too high and its not worth their while setting up here to just resell Eircom, which is why they don't bother

Thanks for the reply. Forgive my ignorance, but what's an LLU?

The ISP rents the Local Loop (Copper wire from exchange to house, AKA Local Loop Unbundling = LLU)
Also rents space in exchange, pays electricity, pays access, installs their own DSL gear and rents backhaul or supplies their own. All very expensive, ComReg has spent 10 years dithering about this and even if the recommended LLU costs (the line) all the other costs are high.

It would be cheaper for Sky to ignore the whole network and build their own!

Sky don't sell BB in the UK to make money. It is mostly a loss leader to remain competitive with Virgin Media's bundled cable TV and BB packages.

Sky could enter the Irish market for the same reasons if UPC's bundled TV and BB packages continue to improve and potentially take customers from Sky.

BTW while still too expensive, some of the LLU charges have been significantly decreased recently by Comreg, perhaps making it more likely that Sky would enter the Irish market.

but on "non-Sky bundled" Sky do make money in UK. On LLU exchanges they have a basic service free for Sky customers. They couldn't afford that loss here.

Well given how much more Sky charge for their TV service here in Ireland compared to the UK, with nice fat margins, it might be possible.

But I agree, it is unlikely, less competition in the Irish TV market (no freeview). However Sky don't need completely free to compete with UPC, they just need to subsidise it enough to compete with UPC bundles.
