Anyone remember Judas Diary? Used to play in the Rosin Dubh back in the day.

Yep. Used to have a good few members from Tuam in them. Came cross an old tape of theirs a few months back.

Good guitar based blues these boys play, personally i find it mind numbing when i hear 8 or 12 bar blues on the run the whole time (i suppose thats what the blues are though :p). But as many as i may know that loathe them, there is just as many who go bat sh1t for them.

Personally THE RYE who play Aras naGael the whole time always get me going and i am surprised it hasn't been mention much b4 on this thread.

Then the usual Cartoon Thieves, Saw Doctors, Kanyu Tree (again, not my forte, but if ur into it they're great), etc.

The Rye did get a shout already.

Elevation Blues Band (they don't play that much)

Was at the last No Banjo gig before the Cartoon Thieves morph;) Deadly!

Besht band in Galway and if you dont believe me I will physically rumble with you in Eyre Square fifties style, leather jackets, switchblades. Might have to use ice creams instead of knives, more civilised.

Personally im not liking this stuff with Sharon Shannon (as regards the Carton Thieves).:(

Ya, I wouldn't count lack of mentions as a count of quality;) I think people often don't mention if it's already there.

Yeah, only caught one or 2 tracks as Cartoon Thieves. Love Sharon's stuff, but think the more traditional blues stuff from No Banjo did it more for me.

    Crystal Snowstorm

    Space Monkey
    AntiTrust
    Beanz On Toast

Anyone care to add some more original acts from the area? No point in mentioning bands that aren't giging or anything really.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,390 ✭✭✭inisboffin

There are a fair few solo acts that are great, gigging with different musicians, but I don't think they really count as 'bands'.

The God Damn Liars are really good, they took over the Sunday night No Banjo residency in the Roisins...

Jesus that's going back a bit - I remember the guitarist looked like Otto the school bus driver from the Simpsons!

A band I was in was in the final of a big Battle of the Bands in the old Setanta night club with them - we won. They were not pleased!

There's a huge amount of apathy towards original music in Galway both by punters (90% only seem to want covers) and musicians (most of the good ones just play in cover bands for the money) and feck all support from venues. It's a complete waste of time trying to be in an original band there.
