If you drive down MacCurtain St. towards the train station, turn left at LeisurePlex. I believe that hill there is Summerhill North, it goes up through St. Lukes Cross. Check Cork Corporation website at www.corkcorp.ie for maps.

It's a very central location, so you're likely to have the occasional problem at night, but it's not a rough area. If you go way up the top of the hill towards Dillon's Cross then it gets slightly worse. St. Lukes is a nice enough area though in my opinion.

Any companies? It's a residential area with the odd shop/pup/restaurant, but at the bottom of the hill there are a few like Siemens on the Lower Glanmire Road. The central location means you're within bus or walking distance of lots of companies though, really depends who you plan on working for.
