    Hi and welcome.

I suppose what calibre and purpose of the rifle will dictate what scope you purchase.

    Basically:

The "4.5-14" part is the magnification range. Magnification determines how close an object appears in the scope in relation to how big it appears to the naked eye, ie 4.5 times nearer up to 14 times nearer.

The "X 40" part is the diameter of the objective lens in millimeters. Ideally you want this to be as large as possible, to gather more light. Please remember that higher mounts might be required for a large diameter scope. At the same time you want to keep the scope mounted as low as possible to the bore.

If you can supply more detail as regards the calibre and purpose of the rifle, some of the guys here can recommend a scope for you.
