Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Which middle name do you want?

He was named Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Gottlieb Mozart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

I think Rasher is right. It's technically 'Wolfgangus'.

    I checked Wikipedia to verify.

If grames_bond accepts that I'll throw in mine. If not just skip mine.

For the first performance of Handel's Messah in Dublin the audience were asked not to wear something to the performance.

Gentlemen were asked not to wear?

Ladies were asked not to wear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

Do you mean George Handel's Messiah?

and to answer your question, no idea. :o

Georg Friedrich Händel's oratorio called "Messiah". (In the interests of precision ;) )

Can I hijack this? No answers forthcoming...

    Got a fun one here:

3 actors, one character; Alec and Ben, who's the third?

    Okay hijack away.

    The answers to my one are;

Gentlemen were requested not to wear their swords (to the performance)

And ladies were requested not to wear hoops in their dresses.

    Reason.... lack of space.

    Harrison Ford, character Jack Ryan

What were Porsche originally going to call the 911, and why did they have to change it?

Interesting - think I'd heard the swords bit before. The hoops is a new one on me. Excellent question.

    901 - The Surrender Monkey's objected.

(admit I didn't draw this answer from my own wealth of knowledge. Thanks to the OH for the number and the interwebs for the reason).

It was going to be called the Porsche 901 but Peugeot (or Renault, one or the other) had the rights (tenously I imagine) on numbers with 0 in the middle. So Porsche simply renamed for production...

So Porsche are known as Surrender Monkeys?

Ahh doesn't matter... carry on with your quiz.

That stoopid beehive hairdoo everybody had in the 70s.

Okay, my turn. This one is a little different.

What is officially recognized as the world's rarest animal?

You don't have to give a scientific name or anything, just a common name or even his (there's a clue) nickname.

Correct. They call him Lonesome Joe.
    Your question.

edit: was expecting at least one or two mad guesses before someone got that one.

    First post in BGRH so:

From what movie is this quote from:

Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock..

Ah some film this. Only watched it recently. In fact I shall endeavour to watch it again this weekend. Better than Citizen Kane.

    "The Third Man"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 238 ✭✭EARMUFFS

    Kudos..

Note to self: more obscurity needed:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭lee_arama

It was a good question and perhaps obscure enough, but not for a film buff such as I. Though I struggle with namby pamby chick flicks.

Q: Which Irishman was considered for the role played by David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 238 ✭✭EARMUFFS

    What year was that?

At a guess I would say Richard Harris or maybe Peter O' Toole ...(for the look more than anything)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭lee_arama

Well I was going to post:

"I can hardly accept answers along the lines of 'is it one of the following answers? ABCDEFG..."

But then you'd just post the answers one at a time.

    Peter O'Toole it is.

    Next question please....

Well you seem to take this thing very seriously so lets up the ante..what classic film starred a famous retired silent movie star as a farm lady who takes two orphans under her wing..if you need any hints let me know..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭lee_arama

Great question. I've spent an age going thru filmographies looking for the specific film.

To begin with I'm looking at the female stars, but have an inkling that it's a male star playing drag in a talkie....

    I'll take the hint please...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 238 ✭✭EARMUFFS

It was directed by another famous movie actor (of the time) but unfortunately he never directed again due to the poor reviews this movie received..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭lee_arama

Wow - I can't find it. Silent's were not my forte and I don't know enough of them to work it out...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 238 ✭✭EARMUFFS

Ok the silent movie link has thrown you so i'll throw in another final hint..It was made in the same year as Rebel Without A Cause and has one of the most memorable villains of all time..

Is it "Through the back door" with Mary Pickford?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭lee_arama

    Fantastic question.

I'd been looking at Night of the Hunter an hour back but couldn't see the silent movie star in there...

LOVE HATE. Classic. Never seen it to be fair but have it sitting at home for a rainy windy night...

I had also looked at it being one of the Gish sisters but somehow missed this one on Lillians bio...*slaps forehead*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 238 ✭✭EARMUFFS

Ok you got it but you lose brownie points for not actually seeing it..The hype about it is justified probably alone for the cinematography and set design which when you consider it was made in the 50s was way ahead of its time.

    Your turn?
