Obama wins South Carolina by a landslide

    called as projected winner as soon as the polls closed at 7pm local time. now 99% of precints results reported, with Obama taking taking 55% of the popular vote, versus Clinton's 26, and Edwards' 18, far more than the poll's estimates of ~12% win for Obama.

    According to CBS exit polls, Obama making large gains among white and female voters, 2 subsets which were expected to go overwhelmingly to Clinton, as well as almost every major voter subset: http://election.cbsnews.com/campaign2008/exitPoll.shtml?state=SC&race=P&jurisdiction=0&party=D

    no conclusive word on delegate counts yet, but at the moment according to CNN, of 45 delegates, Obama 25, Clinton 11, Edwards 5 confirmed, suggesting yet another well spread pick-up of delegates by the Obama campaign, as seen in Nevada with less of the popular vote, but taking more delegates than Clinton.

    by my count, the total count including SC should give Obama ~15 delegates more than Clinton going into Super Tuesday....

    Intrestingly, the demographics for the Democratic voters were 61% female, 39% male. The Republican voters in S.C. were almost exactly split 50/50. No idea if that means anything.

    Considering the nearly 2:1 ratio of females voting to males in the D primary, that's a hell of a boost for Obama that he managed to win that one. Ol Edwards didn't do as well as he needed to. I don't think Kucinich is going to last much longer.

    It seems the media has managed to piss off a lot of the locals. There's all this speculation about "would South Carolina's large black female population vote for the woman candidate, or the half-white candidate?" This sparked quite a lot of letters and Op-Ed pieces from black women saying "We're voting on the issues, and we're offended that you think we're so shallow that we'll just vote for a woman or coloured man"

    Over on the right-wing sites I frequent, they're not sure if this is a win-win for them, or a lose-lose. On the plus side, they get great joy from seeing Hillary lose, and if Obama gets the nomination, at least the next President won't be Hillary. On the negative side, it means that the person they think is most likely to beat their candidate has just gotten another boost, which decreases the chance of an R in the White House next term.

    Totally expected after the Obama camp cried about Race being made an issue. The Blacks in SC stood by their man. Now sit back and watch Hillary steamroll into Tsunami Tuesday...

    I don't think so. Don't forget it's the clinton camp constantly bringing up race - Bill kept mentioning Jesse Jackson for instance, I've never heard Obama mentioning him.

    It's easy to see why Obama is so popular. His winning speech last night was nothing short of inspirational. He's a fantastic orator. Both candidates are very similar on many issues so it could all come down to charisma and personality. and there is only one winner there.

    What it does show yet again is how little trust you can have in opinion polls. According to polls Obama was expected to win, but not by as much as he did. It would have been very bad for his campaign had he lost. I think that it also shows that everyone and anyone has an opinion on this and news sources have jumping on every angle -some of them spectacularly wrong (Clinton - NH :rolleyes:).

    Yes Obama's oratory is impressive but his grasp of things beyond the dream doesn't seem to be. Still all to play for.

    SC is a black majority state.. considering Barak is the first credible black presidential candidate ever, its not suprising.

    But Obama also won in Iowa - not a huge black population there. Bill was talking crap like he has been talking throughout this campaign. Jackson never had a chance of becoming president, so comparing him to Obama is irrelevent.

    Interesting Poll i heard the other night, over 50% of Americans dislike Hillary. And most of them will never vote for her. That's why the democrats should see some sense and nominate Barack. He'll beat McCain. She won't.
