Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Good pubs/craic in Wexford area for the rugby?

    Hi,

There's a bunch of us coming over to Wexford in March for the Ireland v Wales Six Nations game. We'll be coming over on the Friday, going back Monday morning, and have decided not to go up to Dublin on the Saturday for various reasons.

So, with that in mind, does anyone have any recommendations of where to go to watch the game? We're staying in Wexford town itself, but pretty keen on going to some other random town/village if there's a good pub there! We fancy a good pub/town with some great craic and not too touristy!!

Our provisional plan is to stay in Wexford town itself on the Friday night, Saturday go somewhere random to watch the game and Sunday go somewhere else random.

What’s Curracloe like? Heard there's a pub called Furlongs there where the cast of Saving Private Ryan used to go?

    Cheers!
    Gareth

Sorry Im not 100% sure on best pub for rugby but bear in mind that Curracloe is a good few miles out and you would all have to get taxis out there.....there are a load of pubs in the town area and I'm sure loads will have the rugby on (none of em seem to be too touristy at all)
Wexford by night has a load of decent enough pubs and if the mood suits you could even try one of the few clubs

As for Curracloe to visit it has a fantastic beach but, unless I have missed it when driving through many times not a lot else (other than a few pubs and eateries....that only locals generally frequent out of the summer season)....maybe someone will correct me if I am wrong!

Con Mackens got (still gets??) a good Welsh crowd off the ferry. Amate would open up in the morning and find them waiting for him in the Bull Ring!

    Cheers for the info!

How about Wexford rugby club? Is that in the same place as the cricket ground to the north of the town? Cant seem to find it on any maps?

You should head along to New Ross. I broke in my barman spurs there bigtime. There was a great ould man bar called the old Bridge bar in Rosbercon but its been knocked to make way for more stupid assed apartments. Failing that, there is Prendergasts bar on the quays. Its a great sports bar. There is a great craic there. New Ross is like 20 minutes from waterford. That is if all the traffic that makes it an hour away from Waterford magically disappears for some reason.

Yeah, the rugby club is the place by the cricket club but I would recommend going elsewhere.

To be honest anywhere on the Quays will be packed and good.

I haven't been in the Stores since the remake (never liked it, never will!) but I imagine that would be good craic there.

Where exactly is "They Quays"? Is it Commercial Quay road?

Isn't the rugby club any good for watching the rugby then? Back home our rugby clubs are always roofed for the rugby and the atmosphere is terrific. Well, that's until Wales loses and then it's like being at a funeral! ;-)

I've done some nosing elsewhere online and all in all this is the list of recommended pubs I've found in Wexford itself (not in any particular order!)...

    Thomas Moore Tavern
    The Crown Bar
    The Sky & The Ground
    Centenary Stores
    Dakota
    Chocolate
    Wrens Nest

    I've also seen these recommended...

    Mackens
    South 51
    McDonalds Bar
    Mary's Bar
    The Woodenworks
    Westgate Tavern

Doesn't it depress you, going to so many funerals?

Well done Saturday, by the way.

Aye, we were all suicidal going to so many funerals with our former coach - do not mention the world cup!! :( Fingers crossed that Gatland can make sure we don't go to so many from now on! Hopefully we'll both be unbeaten heading into our game in a months time!!!! ;)

I'll cross that Tom Moore off our list of potential pubs then!

By the way, where would you recommend us to go on the Sunday? Are there are local(ish) sporting events going on? Or any towns a short taxi/bus/train distance from Wexford town that could be good to visit for a pint or two?

Sky and the Ground or The Stores are the ones I would be heading to..

Local transport is pretty crap and taxis are
    a) expensive
    b) rare

so I would just hang round the town, its big enough to wander around / have a bit of craic in..

True - but you don't want to be waiting in the back arse of nowhere for two hours for a taxi that may or may not come..

Cheers for all the comments! Really appreciate it as I want to have some sort of "plan of action" before we come over!

Sounds like we best stay in Wexford town itself!

There's three bus loads of us coming over from our rugby club - staying in Whites, so I'm sure you'll spot some of us about over three days if you're out and about that weekend!

Around 3.50/3.60, you should maybe check out Taghmon its a lovely area around 20mins from wexford town, people are really friendly and the pubs are brilliant.

Cheers for the info!! That in Euros?

To watch the match you should go to the Wrens Nest, Chocolate or The Crown Bar. You should stay in the town because taxis can be unreliable and theres not much to do outside the town! That night you should go to the Stores, its the main disco bar/nightclub where people go! You could watch the match in the bar in the stores too, but then you would'nt have to move for the whole day!! If you feel like a gamble there's casinos one on the quay and one in Newbay Country House-opens all night, many go there after the stores! Whites Hotel is a great base for all the pubs in Wexford!
Curracloe is a tiny village about 7 miles from town and there is a hotel and a bar (furlongs). It is really a seaside village so there would not be many around this time of year. Its packed in the summer though.
Hope you enjoy your weekend in Wexford!!

Thanks for the info trixie. We have decided to stay in town itself now as there does seem to be quite a few places to go there! Will probably go on a bit of a pub crawl on the Friday night to get familiar with the different pubs and then get ready to settle in for a long day Saturday!

Just one thing, and I apologise for all the questions and all, but is a pint about 3.60 Euros or 3.60 Sterling? (We just trying to work out how much money to take with us!!). Ta!

Euros! Also, some prices go up as the night goes on..

Here in Dublin, we are paying a fiver a pint

Well, just a few days to go before we come over now.

Look out for us - there's over 120 players and supporters coming over from our rugby club.

We're due to arrive at Rosslare about 6:15pm on Friday with many of us going on a pub crawl as soon as we get into Wexford.

    Can't wait now!

I was meant to be back in Wex for the match, however will be watching it from Dublin!

I hope you have a good time!

I'm sure Dublin will be packed with Welsh rugby supporters - I know quite a few myself who are going there!
I hope you have a good time!

Cheers zaraba! I'm sure we will. Always do in Ireland!

I'll be in Croke park for the game but shall be hanging around town on friday and sunday so may see ye all there, and wear my ireland jersey!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 bravon33

There's about 25 of our lot going up to Croke Park for the game. The rest will be watching it in Wexford town itself. Several of us will be wearing our club tops on the Friday (It's red and black and has a Wizard emblem) but we'll prob be wearing our Welsh jerseys on Sat and Sun. So you may well see us ;-)

Cheers zaraba! We were under the cosh for the first quarter but we seemed to settle down a bit after that.

Hope you can make it a clean sweep for the Celtic Nations over the "Inglish" on Saturday at Twickenham!!!!

Had a fantastic time in Wexford and went to most of the pubs mentioned on this thread, so thanks to for all the advice!

Almost did get stuck over there until Thursday too! We were due to come back 9am on Monday morning. Then we were told Monday 9pm due to the weather. We got to Rosslare and alot of peoples faces went white looking at the waves crashing in! We finally left at 11:15 and was told that if we didnt go then we'd be in Ireland until Thursday (not necessariyl a bad thing!).

Hell of a trip, some great pubs in Wexford and, of course, a very warm welcome!
