    Hi lads,

I'm a South African citizen living here in Ireland for the past 5 years. I used to do some IPSC shooting back home and would really like to join the IPSA. Is there any possibility for me to bring over my handguns and reloading equipment? What exactly is the current firearm licensing legislation, specifically pertaining to handguns and the reloading of ammunition? How does importation of such items work?

I've contacted the IPSA via e-mail as well but are yet to hear from them, so your inputs would be much appreciated in the meantime.

I've texted IPSA secretary to PM you ASAP.

    regards,

Your e-mail was recieved "Mon 28/01/2008 15:43" but unfortunatly I have to work to pay for my sport and I am just getting around to my emails now.

In regard to your query about legislation and importing a firearm and reloading, a quick search of this forum would give you much information.

If you require information about IPSA, check out the website where all rules and regulations are available and if you have any more queries let me know but for interpretations of the law and the ins and outs of importing firearms and of reloading, the Dept. of Justice is your best bet.

T-Maxx. The website is www.ipscireland.org. I must appologise though it's not quite as up to date as I wish. I'm currently working on updating it with lots of info and links and FAQ's etc that will hopefully answer a lot of questions about firearms legislation & IPSC shooting in Ireland. However in the meantime if you need further information on IPSC in Ireland let me know.

    Pat.

Pat, it seems to me that membership of a sanctioned club is a pre-requisite for obtaining a firearm certificate? At the same time you need the firearm cert to get IPSA membership (Clause 1 of the Rules & Regulations)?

For a pistol only T-maxx. Pistols are being granted licences only for target shooting, and the Super will want to see that you're a member of a suitable club. There are several, and if you weren't in one, you couldn't use the thing anyway, so it's no big deal at the end of the day.

That's what I'm specifically referring to - pistols.

(In my original post I mentioned the term "handguns" - I assume now that the term isn't familiar here?)

    T-Maxx,

IPSA is not a shooting club - they are just the representative body for IPSC in Ireland.

I am assuming you were expecting that if you were to join IPSA you could then apply for a firearm as you are a member of a club. This is not the case.

First you must join an actual Shooting Club, then you can apply for your firearm license. Once you get your firearms license you can start to talk to IPSA about joining them.

Once you have your membership of IPSA you will be able to travel to shoots abroad.

Right so. Can anyone recommend a club in my area (North County Dublin) that caters for pistol shooting. I've looked at the wiki list of clubs but don't find any close to home, except Courtlough in Balbriggan which doesn't do pistol shooting .

Die beste manier is om n lid van jou naaste Klub te word .Dan om n lid te word van die IPSA . Maar jy moet n lid wees van n klub om n Pistool lisensie te kan kry . IPSA is net n orginasasie . Sodra jy n lid daar word sal jy baie help kry .

    Groete

Sorry, Google doesn't have an Afrikaans to English translation tool, care to elaborate?

No worries, Here's a reasonable stab at translation:

the best way is to be a member of your nearest club. then to become a member of the IPSA . but you need to a member be of a club to get a gun license. IPSA is only an orginisation. Once you are a member there, you will get very good help. but you yourself must get the license and import permit . it is always ones own responsibility . you'll not be able to do IPSA shooting if you don't own your own firearm does'nt have that/what here gelesiensieer is . it is for safety reasons etc and a great reel believe me because there's not a handgun culture here . .

    regards ...

    Or something like that. :)

Not a bad attempt . That is more or less the gist . Those translation things arent always that precise . I can just understand how frustrated he must be .REgards :):):):)

Please don't let this descend into some sort of argument about handgun licensing. Assistance for the OP only please.

Does any one have accurate infromation on the Restricted list that was to be finilised recently?

"No" is the short answer. Despite rumours to the contrary, the list is not finalised, has not been presented to the FCP, and noone's seen anything on it in over six months at least.
Also, probably not the best subject to be bringing up given the post just above yours...
