    anyone know of a good (o/s and free perhaps) program for accessing my home pc and checking files etc etc ?

    try logmein.com, I've been using it for a year or so and it's pretty good, gives total control of your pc

    Woudl remote login not do the trick or are we talking unix etc?

    LogMeIn is the quickest & easiest way.

    Real VNC is more comprehensive but requires a little more work to set up.
