Using a wireless router through a UL network port?

Is this possible? My class have moved to a different area this semester, and whilst there are ports at each of our desks, only a handful of them work. Would it be possible to use a router and plug it into one of the ports at the desks?

    Cheers

I wireless router designed for ADSL or cable broadband won't work as they're (AFAIK) only designed to route from their modem. A wireless access point/gateway should work no probs once configured suitably.

Yes it is possible to do. I'm too tired to explain how to do it now though. ^^^^ Generally a Modem/Router combo won't work as the WAN port on the router is an RJ-11 port. Something like a Linksys WRT54G should do the job.

Excellent. Does this contravene UL ITD policy or anything? Will they notice all the traffic coming from one port?

    Thanks very much!

Depends. If there are 100 people downloading porn from the wireless, then maybe. But I have downloaded as much as 15Gb (not all of it porn!) over the course of an hour and nothing was done about it.

These are the people who can't get the results website working properly. You think they would even notice something like that anyway?

True. There shouldn't even be that high traffic through it, we just want it there to have internet where we are in the studio, working on projects/emails/bebo etc, the usual stuff.

Woah, I won't be using bebo (well I will), I'm just sure out of the 15 or so of us that have laptops, bebo will be raped by someone.

So this is possible anyway? Linksys WRT54G and boom?

EDIT: This will be placed in the main building by the way, somewhat near the library. I'm sure the signal will go outside the walls of where we are, what if someone sees this random wireless signal popping up on their laptop? (Not in that will they be able to connect to it, but could that cause someone to be iffy about it?)

Pretty much so, you may have to do a small bit of configuration on the hardware but nothing too difficult.

Nope it shouldn't cause a problem...the signal won't be hugely strong anyway. I'd imagine ITD would leave you alone as well if it doesn't cause any of their equipment problems.

Just a thought, but could you use one of the FON wireless routers (Fonera) to do this. Not very knowledgeable on networks so feel free to point out how silly this idea is!

I've never used one of those FON jobbies but I'd imagine it could be configured to do what Funkstard is looking for.
