Can you spray a helmet a different colour? i remember reading somewhere not to put stickers on them as the adhesive destroys the shell. Is it the same for sprays?

Plastic or some polycarbonate helmets may be affected. Fiberglass will be fine. Check what youve got. Basically more expensive brands are often ok (arai shoei) but cheap and cheerful ones wont be.

Stupid question time: will it say on the helmet what it is made of?

Sometimes, but not always! You should recognise a fiberglass one if you can see the inside of the shell, and if it has a seam along the crown its a very cheap and nasty plastic. What brand is it?

Its a "driver", and its too well padded inside to take apart.

Most of the drivers are plastic. I wouldnt spray it. Esp if its getting on a bit in age, put the money in a new one.
