If your line is indeed a business line then eircom should offer you business broadband.

Don't take those results as gospel because that site gives spurious results sporadically. Check your download speed on a good fast FTP like Heanet.

Whats the story with existing modems that don't support ADSL+2? Will it matter that my speed is only going up to 7.6?

I have an alcatel Speedtouch Us modem supplied by Eircom.

Edit: Could someone explain the deal with line stats?

Your line stats can help you figure out your distance from the exchange and the quality of your line. Your router or modem will usually have a line stats page that'll give you all the info you need. You can then enter your line stats into this page and it'll calculate your approximate max dsl speed as well as give you a rough estimate of the quality of your line.

Interestingly, it estimates that my line could handle up to about 20Mbps download using ADSL2+ but I'd say we'd be well into Obama's second term in office before Eircom would allow us those kinds of speeds ;-)

Should we still expect the 2mb and 3mb speeds to upgrade in June?

In other words did the 4mb and 6mb services upgrade as promised in March - May. I notice that Eircom are still advertising 4 and 6mb business services on their webpage.

    Hi,

Do I need to contact BT and submit my request for the 3MB upgrade to 7.6MB?

These are the speed stats for my modem..

    Speed:
ADSL: 8 Mbps downstream, 800 kbps upstream
LAN: 10/100 Mbps (Half Duplex) 20/200 (Full Duplex)
    Wireless: Up to 11 Mbps

Will I need to get a new one that is ADSL+2 compatible?

Got a letter in the post from BT today saying the upgrade will be automatic when it comes in June, plus other call saving offers...

3mb up to 8mb €56 p/m with some calls and line rental, not bad..

Was the download cap mentioned at all in the letter?

Your guess is as good as mine. One of my customers on 4meg business wasn't upgraded as of last Friday.

You've been upgraded to their 8meg already. Your modem seems to be handling it fine.:)

I got that letter aswell Squall. You'll only get the 8meg if you're on one of their unbundled and upgraded exchanges. If you're not then it'll be 7.6 max, whenever Eircom get the finger out.

    No..

Just said 2mb will go to up to 3mb, 3mb up to 8mb ( where available ) and 3mb up to 7.6mb nationwide..

Nothing about download limit or exact date of new speed, sometime in June it said..

No no no... That is what my modem IS CAPABLE OF. :)

My actual download speed as shown on the modem now is 3072kbps. :(

    I'm in Kilkenny city.

    :o

    What modem is it?

Either way older modems should be good for 8meg, and possibly 10.
Kilkenny is on their 'Comming Soon' list so you'll probably go to 7.6 first, then to 8 when the exchange is done.

    BT New services from June:

BB Option 1 €22.50 Per month 10gb limit 48:1 contention Speed up to 1 mb
BB Option 2 €32.50 Per month 20gb limit 48:1 contention Speed up to 3 mb
BB Option 3 €42.50 Per month 30gb limit 24:1 contention Speed up to 8 mb

Be interesting to see what speed I get on option 3 in a non 8mb area, they say up to 7.6mb!

I also got the letter, the option 3 needs explaining...it *only* applies to exchanges that have been unbundled by BT. If you are on a 3MB package you'll get the 7.6 package, NOT 8MB....unless you are connected to one of the BT unbundled exchanges on the list:

    It's still listed as 30GB

I was also told on the phone this "upto" *8MB for the price of 3MB only applies to business customers who are connected to an unbundled exchange. All other customers (99% of us) who are non business or not connected to a BT unbundled exchange will receive the free upgrade from 3MB to 7.6MB....basically a normal Eircom package.

In addition BT's terms and conditions are being rewritten from June 27th, i am *hoping* they'll also ammend the issue i pointed out releating to mastersockets and who is responsible and who pays (namely YOU - the customer).
