Those line tests have been proven as innaccurate. I understand wanting to be anonymous but then just don't say what exchange you're on- you wont be forced to in that thread!

Yes they can be pretty inaccurate but they do no different than guessing possible speed by stats.

christ the pings look even higher than what was on the normal business packages over the years. My ISDN line from years back gave way better pings than that. Looks like the latency to irish servers will be around 70 to 120ms on the 7.6meg package.

Wow but try a few different speedtests using different servers because sometimes that site can be wrong. Also, if you have time could you post details in here- you speeds are particularly interesting but don't say what exchange you're on if you don't want to.

Yeah I never use speedtest.net, they always quote me the wrong speed. speedtest.ie is more accurately reporting my line as 814kBps download (6.51Mbps) and 70 kBps upload (567kbps). Still, I'm fairly happy.

    Router stats:
    Rate (Kbps): 7616 672
    SNR Margin (dB): 13.7 12.0
    Attenuation (dB): 18.0 8.0
    Output Power (dBm): 2.7 10.0

I'm on the Glanmire, Cork exchange. I imagine the sync speeds are good because that dreary looking grey building at the bottom of the hill I'm on is probably the exchange.

Cheers. Yup, your attenuation is very good so it probably is the exchange. They are usually ugly one storey buildings.

Nice speeds but pretty dirty pings :(
That site is inaccurate for calculating Pings. Mine are nowhere near as high as that.

Actually, my ping times havnt been affected by the upgrade. They still average 30-40ms for local servers, 60-70 for servers in Germany and 120-ish for US servers.

    Pings to kplay.de:
    PING kplay.de (81.3.59.4) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from kate.krawall.de (81.3.59.4): icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=77.0 ms
    64 bytes from kate.krawall.de (81.3.59.4): icmp_seq=2 ttl=56 time=76.9 ms
    64 bytes from kate.krawall.de (81.3.59.4): icmp_seq=3 ttl=56 time=79.6 ms
    64 bytes from kate.krawall.de (81.3.59.4): icmp_seq=4 ttl=56 time=75.1 ms

    --- kplay.de ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 2999ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 75.128/77.184/79.651/1.624 ms

    Pinging boards.ie:
    PING boards.ie (89.234.66.107) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from ip-89-234-66-107.dedi.digiweb.ie (89.234.66.107): icmp_seq=1 ttl=62 time=50.0 ms
    64 bytes from ip-89-234-66-107.dedi.digiweb.ie (89.234.66.107): icmp_seq=2 ttl=62 time=50.7 ms
    64 bytes from ip-89-234-66-107.dedi.digiweb.ie (89.234.66.107): icmp_seq=3 ttl=62 time=52.3 ms
    64 bytes from ip-89-234-66-107.dedi.digiweb.ie (89.234.66.107): icmp_seq=4 ttl=62 time=54.5 ms

    --- boards.ie ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 2998ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 50.057/51.920/54.527/1.738 ms

If it made any difference, I could get my line switched to fastpath.. but the latency on my connection isn't that bad.

Would someone on 7.6Mbps mind doing a tracert to boards.

I wanna see where the ****e ping times are coming from.

theres dos pings to boards.ie a few posts up and they are ranging 50 to 60ms, there normally around 12ms so thats quite a jump.

I am fully aware of that.

    ping != tracert

Hmm, upgraded here on Caherdavin but syncing at 4096/384. My line stats can easily handle the full amount. Thats odd.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 171 ✭✭admol

Can someone explain this? My stats seem to have improved since yesterday?

Is my router compensating for the low SNR and increasing the output power?

    Old Stats

That's weird admoi! You made no changes like changing wires? What router have you got? Are you really getting those speeds, downloads are going above 750 K per second?

I dunno much about it or if its been posted already. But there was a broadband outage in the 074 area last week. A relation works for eircom so I got him to ask about it he said they upgraded a card or something in sligo and it didn't work so they tried the old card again and it wouldn't work and thats why it was down. I don't know if this is related to this topic but I just thought I would throw it out there.

my exchange just been upgraded will post ping times download speeds etc in a mo, gotta get my brother to do it since im not at home :)

    got em

Go my bro to test some pings so here ya go

    ping to kplay.de 40 average
    ping to utservers.nl 30 average
    ping to jolt/multiplay.co.uk 20 average
ping to eircom.net/boards etc 10-15 average

Ping times on the 3mb package upgrades have seemed to improved, thank god i downgraded to 2mb and am not stuck with 7.6mb and 100 ms pingtimes!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,934 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

looks like i'll be on the phone to eircom as soon as i get home from my holidays downgrading my package and saving myself 18 euros a month so! The pingtimes on the 7.6meg package are a joke.

Nothing wrong with BT mate. You sure you had your modem set up correctly? There is an option to disconnect automatically when the line is not in use.. But there is also an always on option.

The 24 hour ip renewal is never an issue for me..

Have to agree...Im with BT for over a year..never any problems!nice fast downloads and fast pings! normally my pings are among the lowest when on servers in europe!

as for re-wire-ing ....all sumed up already by another user.

but its fairly simple..find the 2 wires commin into house. buy your own junction box . install it (easy!)..and plug in there. I have my wireless phone plugged in there also. thus only use one filter!(and i have 2 phones in the house)..can buy cordless phones from any shop for about 35 euro. I got ones made my BT, and NEVER anyproblems!

I rewired the mastersocket myself. I was kinda sceptical doing it myself and so i asked here but no one replied so i bit the bullet and did it myself.

I posted pictures. Might be of use to people who are wondering which wire is which etc.

EDIT: I cant edit the original post, but i was correct in my assumptions just incase anyone is wondering.
