According to the information supplied by Eircom, my exchange in Tramore should have been upgraded the weekend of July 26th. Now, from speaking to EsatBT they said its not yet been done. Why the delay?

All sorted.. twas upgraded. Your man in Esat was mistaken :)

my netopia software version is 7.4.2r2. Would an upgrade help with the sync speed issue of 5 meg rather than 7?

I expected to see 7 and have issues downloading at that speed. Not see 5 megs and get even less than that actually...

Clonee, 1.4 km from exchange, still quite a bit off 7.6

Same for me. I'm in Ongar about 1.5km from Clonee exchange.
Syncing at 5102/512 since this morning.

Kanturk Exchange. Netopia modems telling me line is now 2560kbps down, 384kbps up. Restarted modem several times but speed is now 1/3 of what is was preupgrade. Nice one Eircom

    router 5120/512

    speed test.net 4237/231

what confuses me is not the speed drop in test (as have to explore connections in house) + 2 k to exchange etc.

But why would the netopia router show sync speed of 5120?

Not to flame you but you are wrong with this one, higher speed does not have to equal higher pings.

Completely different. I hope eircom can sort this part of the upgrade out.

    got upgraded today...

    im on 3 meg(254KB's)...now...563KB's

so around 5 meg..ish..but happy with that..cause Im way outside the town..
no download limits is the BIG thing...yippeee.

ping times are about doubled..depends on which server...

so average from 18ms on boards.ie to 56ms ish..Surfing the net does not seem faster..same stuff.just for downloads...got 563KB's from www.gamespot.com (which im a member - thus fast speeds)..

    m.

downloaded 2.06gig file in about 45 mins.. (Americans army game)

ok..your kinda right..but in general when upgrading ..so far most people have worse pings...im on BT.

and same for me..and lots others!

anyway...5 meg is fine...no difference in surfin net...i set up static IP on my computers..seemed to speed wireless surfing a little..

Its only that case with this upgrade and thats only because they are pushing the lines to the absolute limit so they have put higher interleaving in place. For any other situation higher speeds would never mean higher pings.

Higher speeds != higher pings, necessarily. However, for Eircom customers, it does. :)

I see that after the upgrade that my nosie margin has gone doen to an average of 7-8db. It has been hopping around and has gone as high as 10, but also as low as 2. Is there anything I can do to get it to settle at a higher number. So far it hasn't caused any problems, but I believe if it goes below 7 it can cause synch problems.
