Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    1. The Godfather
    2. The Shawshank Redemption
    3. The Godfather: Part II
    4. Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il
    5. Pulp Fiction
    6. Schindler's List
    7. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    8. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
    9. Casablanca
    10. Shichinin no samurai

I got this from The Internet Movie Database, I have seen the godfather films, i think they are good, But not good enought to appear on every top ten list i could find...Does anyone think that some of these movies dont deserve to be here? Or that they are over rated?

Looks like a list the internet would come up with alright.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭Ross_Mahon

But whenever you see things like 'the top ten movies ever' on tv, They are just about the same thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭beans

Always thought 'Shawshank' was waaaay over-rated. None of them are bad movies, but it's not the most original list in the world eh? Where's 'The Big Lebowski'? :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭Ross_Mahon

I thought that film was 'alright' I think the well known orignal films seem to get on the list.

Well it is done by people's voting, and anyone can vote at any time, so there can be no complaints.

I actually own 74 of IMDB's top 100 movies (last time I checked).

Mods, don't move this to the films board, as this thread would get instantly locked over there.

    Willem Defoes best ever performance.

I've never even heard of Shichinin no samurai.
Funny how empire strikes back is higher than the first star wars.

Not really, it is the better film after all.

Isn't this more suited to the film forum?

Karl Hungus would lock this thread in a second. And he'd be right to do so as well, as lots of threads of lists ten to clog up boards. It's okay in after hours due to the higher volume of traffic.

Fight club sould be no 1 IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,129 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

Lawrence of Arabia has obviously been demoted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭briantwin

I think it would be better if this thread was directed towards the best 10 films of the last decade. so 1998 - 2008. IMO everyone can give a slightly more informed list as opposed to churning out the same lists 40 times over. Limit it to the last 10 years and you'll get some interesting responses.

    Anyone agree?

As much as I like Fight Club it wouldn't get number one imo. I love the Godfather trilogy but I dont think it should be in the top five either. A great movie should be a movie that every time you see it again its just as good.

Shawshank has this imo. But for me I'd have Casino, Goodfella's, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, American Beauty(Spacey is too ****ing good in that :) ) - films that you'd watch again because they give you a buzz watching them.

Where'd that film about whosit with whatsisname in it that's always voted best but is self indulgent and overlong go?

To be entirely fair, I wouldn't really lock this one. It's more of a serious question, as oppossed to getting everyone else to post what their top 10 is, ending up with a load of posts with no discussion at all. As it is, I think it's suitable, and wouldn't get locked.

Not exactly last ten years but I think I should educate the masses anyway.....
Midnight Express, Jean De Florette & Manon Des Sources (two for the price of one!!), The Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects are the ones that really like

Unfortunately now most of the discussion is on how it would get locked elsewhere!

Decent list in that they're all great movies, but im not sure how many of them id have on my personal top 10. Its all relative.

to be fair its 100% peoples personal preference when it comes to these things...certain people like a certian type of film.
for that reason i dont think there ever can be a definitive 10 best ever movies list.

Yeah, sure didn't channel four do a Top 100 films of all time recently and had Star Wars at number 1. You see a lot of different top 10 film lists, but is it just me or is Shawshank Redemption always number 2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

xXx 2 isn't there...pffft...what do internet people know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85,174 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

    Willem Defoes best ever performance.

"So now we've got a huge big guy theory and a serial crusher!"

    **** that quote anyway:

Name one thing you're gonna need the stupid fcuking rope for! :D

also: "You know, you Irish cops are perking up. That's two sound theories in one day, neither of which deal with abnormally sized men. Kind of makes me feel like Riverdancing"

"They exited out the front door. They had no idea what they were in for. Now they're staring at six men with guns drawn. It was a ****ing ambush.

... 'What if it was one guy with six guns?' "

"Television. Television is the explanation for this - you see this in bad television. Little assault guys creeping through the vents, coming in through the ceiling - that James Bond **** never happens in real life! Professionals don't do that!"

    there is no better movie....

By Freaks, do you mean that weird black and white film from the thirties (or thereabouts) with the pinhead family? Thats one creepy film which really shows a world from yesteryear.

Shawshank Redemption, good film but the most over-rated film ever.

You can tell it's a tosserish film buff movie list as they don't call "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly by its English title, same with Seven Samurai. Grow the f**K up, we know you appreciate "cinemar" more than we do, cos we're just plebs.

Anyway, I'd take out Schindler's List and throw in Goodfellas somewhere.

Blade Runner ought be in there somewhere....

    Plus La Vita E Bella...

    ....in my most humble opinion...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,367 ✭✭✭Agamemnon

    Manon Des Sources
The only thing I can remember about that film is Emmanuelle Béart running around naked. But that's enough to make my top ten. :)

Transformers should be there, also the first half of Die Hard 4. I can't comment on the second half because I fell asleep.

My favourite film when I was a kid: "Me Grimlock no bozo, me king!", "Now, all we need is a little Energon... and a lot of luck.", etc, etc...

There's a Film forum. Although pointless "top 10" threads are not looked upon favourably over there.
