Punkbuster question

How does Punkbuster actually work? My expectation is as follows... but I'm not sure. If someone has altered some game settings to give them an advantage, such as gun firing rate or bullet penenration, Punkbuster detect this and kick the player, is correct ?

It monitors all the game files and processes to make sure nothing dodgy is running, and it also takes screenshots or your game at random interval and uploads them to the game server.
