I've been driving a 9-5 2.0 turbo auto lately, and I have to say I was very impressed with it. They're a lovely place to sit, and if I hadn't needed the versatility of the Forester i'd still be quite happily punting around in it.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

The one in your picture is all show and no go. It uses the old 2.2l Opel diesel engine

There was a 180 bhp version though wasn't there?

I told him about 96/97 7 Series diesels but he doesn't want a big engine.

Here's one that caught my eye recently: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=862085
It's not exactly sporty, but I can think of far worse places to while away the winter. (a 22-year-old 911 cabrio with no carpets springs to mind!)

Afaik they were all 115BHP in that model, but I could be wrong

The only diesel 7 series of that vintage is the 725tds. That's even slower than the Saab :D

Which like any E38 diesel, never made it to Ireland(they never even bothered to offer any diesel E38 in RHD).

I wouldn't buy the 2.2 diesel, I'm fairly sure that was massively underpowered. But the old Aero or Viggen could be a bit of a laugh. Didn't the Viggen have 230 or so BHP? I'd say that would have an unbelieveable amount of torque steer!!

There are better Saabs than the 93 / 900 (for less money)

The coupe looks so much better though I think.

not from the inside ...and especially not when you're driving it.

The 9000 is a fantastic (and grossly underrated) car, trust me ...

Sure, it's not exactly stunning, but I've seen worse.

On the coupe I particularly dislike the arse of it ...it's too bulky.

No matter what wheels you put on it, they always look tiny and "wrong"

I like the looks of the 9-3 coupe alright. And as Anan said, it's forte surely is it's comfort. Nice place to be in. It's still just a luxurious Opel Vectra though

Mark, Is your friends' highest priority that it be comfortable? Any other requirements? So he doesn't want a big engine. What's the max?

    For comfort I'd consider a W210. Perhaps a high spec E240 V6 auto?

Kinda see your point in the picture there Peasant. He wants a diesel, I did mention an older A8 to him but again, 2L is his preference. He has a 06 Landcruiser which he bought new, he does over 40,000 kms a year and just wants to buy a car in cash and have no repayments anymore. I need to open his eyes a bit though! He has 5/6k and thinks newer Golf, whereas I wanna show him some top end cars that were once 80/100k and now 12 years later are relatively small change but are far better and more pleasurable to own than a Golf.

That 2.2 diesel GM unit is the SAAB is terrible. It is slow, load and unrefined, all the opposite of what a SAAB should be.

    How about something like this:

Proven BMW diesel engine, leather interior and the 75 is pretty well built.

    Of course it is :)

A very comfortable but very expensive Opel Vectra

Officially, Opel call it a coupe though and not a hatchback...

could be a bit of a dark horse as well ...though I'm not 100% sure how good or bad that particular engine is. The car itself is a comfy mile muncher.

Actually I would prob put my money on this.

I know of the guy who got it brand new in 1991 and never sold it until now.
