Vodka and diet 7-up is the absolute best (No disaccharides).

Yes i love the diet 7 up but cannot touch vodka. I dont think any alcohol is good when on asacolon. I do feel very week the morning after even 2-3 pints.... Maybe im getting old:pac:

I'm on Mezavant and Prednisone and have been drinking. I find that if I drink a lot of beer, I'll have an adverse reaction the next day but something like whiskey with water or vodka and soda water won't affect me as much.

I find beer disagrees with me, especially as it has so much gas added to it in Ireland.

Wine (stronger and dryer the better), Guinness in moderation, cider (bulmers pint bottles with ice), Whiskey with Soda water, vodka and lucozade.

It's a case of experimenting and see what works for you.

Alcohol in general isn't great for the bowel, so make sure you have a full stomach before drinking and try not to get plastered too regularly!!

You could be. It's up to you.

A friend of mine just had his colon removed after several years of Crohns flare-ups due to dietary/booze slips during crunch times. I however have controlled mine with the following diet. It's tough, but incomparable to the life he's now facing. The only main consideration with the diet is lack of calcium, so I take a vegetable-based calcium supplement.

Glad to hear you are doing well Consultech and thanks for the support!

You should join the SCDUK mailing list (none for Ireland yet, but lots of Irish involved) They give great support and tips on what is working for them.

I took your advice on Udo's Super 8, finding them very good:)

May I recommend Natren probiotics, they are the best on the market..expensive...but the founder is one of the worlds leading experts on probiotics. The species and strains used have found to be beneficial for Crohn's and Colitis in studies.

Also there are clinics in Australia which specialise in treating patients with enema's using only Natren probiotics.

I can also recommend Jini Pattells book 'Listen to your gut' , it takes SCD to the next level. It gives a detailed breakdown of supplements, diets and probiotics which work for IBD.

One of the founders of SCDUK is giving a lecture to the Irish Medical Council next week, he is going to update the mailing list as to how he got on.

    all the best
    geor

Who do you get your natren probiotics from?

Great thanks, I bought the book you recommended 'listen to your gut' and 'the ibd remission diet'. very interesting but a lot of the supplements are very expensive and difficult to get. I would love to give the diet a chance and get off the meds but i couldn't afford all those supplements as im not working :(

I know its pretty expensive, but heres my tips.....you can't put a price on your health and anyhow think of all the money you spend on medications, consultants and doctors...

The Natren probiotics are the most expensive - probably cost you about 150 a month for 3 months and then around 75 a month for maintenence...

Oil of Oregano - Solgar make a good one, bout 20 quid for 2 months supply

Georges Always Active Aloe Vera - Iherb.com sell it, bout 30 quid for 2 months

These are by far the most important as part of the regime, with the Natren crucial...

You could then try Udo's essential oil (20 quid for 2mths)

L-Glutamine is under 20 quid, will do you months and NAG the same...

    I use http://www.nourish.ie/ , www.iherb.com and http://www.gandginfo.com

I set up a site to give some tips, but cant advertise it on boards , but just do a search for irish sites for Crohns / colitis and you should come across it...

its not a miracle cure, but it can help and I personally have found it great, have been off drugs for 2 years now, there been plenty of ups and downs.....but had a colonscopy recently and my bowel was in great shape, only very mild inflamation detected at biopsy level...so must be having some effect...

BEst of luck and feel free to contact me if ya have any questions...keep me posted on your progress....

by the way, i was looking at trying to import Natren probiotics and sell them on my website.....would be alot cheaper than sourcing them from the Uk, I would need about 10 people interested though...so if you feel there are working for ya let me know and I'll add you to my list ...

I was on the SCD for 6 months, and almost immediately things cleared up. I'm eating like a f**kin idiot nowadays tho, so I need to reign that back or risk another relapse. I'be been (bad) symptom-free for 10 odd months now.

you should try Jini Patels regime.....its less strict than SCD ..., i've found strict SCD is very hard to stay on..

Thanks for the advice I'm going to try the diet but ill have to save up for a few of the supplements so probably wont start it for another month or so. Ill keep you posted and hopefully I can go off these meds!

Seems worth considering, need to try and get my own colitis under control and have read food reports on glutamine. May consider some of the other products also as it is a good recommendation coming from a user. Keep in touch.;)
I am presently on steroids and trying and mezamat and trying this new drug think its called amurin or something like that to control the coliits.

In line with the guidelines of the SCD, this is what worked for me, almost immediately:

    Scrambled eggs (water, no milk)
    Almond flour muffins/biscuits
Bananas, other easy to digest fruit
    Vegetable and chicken soup
    Poached chicken breasts
    Fish
    Various non-abrasive vegetables
    Vegetable-based calcium supplements

Edit: I was taking vegetable based acidophilus and L-Glutamine in a drink once a day also.

I basically lived on this for three months, and symptoms cleared up after 10 days or so. I have been eating like an idiot for the past 3 months, and mine started to kick up again on Monday. I started this again and symptoms are starting to settle down. This works for me, I can't promise it'll work for everyone.

I got diagnosed with Crohns just over 3 years ago, was on steroids and anti nflammatories(Pentasa - which one doctor in Vincents told me they were not even sure it had any effect)... anyways ended up on the SCD, got off all my meds as quick as I could..though you have to be careful with steroids...

anyways the diet works for me... and no drugs cure these conditions... in fact from what I have seen and the people I know personally, they do more harm than good..

I have a post under Crohns which you may find interesting.. I do not want to post again here as I am not a spammer.. it is not for everyone...but then not everyone really wants to be healed...;)

best wishes for your good health

I would like to offer my advice.. as a fellow sufferer of UC i have a few dietary and self medicating tips to help overcome and cure this disease. (although im not sure cure is the right terminology as i am not certain if i am cured but i consider myself in remission and healthy for 2 months now).

After being diagnosed with UC in May '08 and after lengthy and unsuccessful treatment (Including two occasions of hospitalization) I decided i was going to take it upon myself to medicate my condition and with a positive approach, get rid of this crippling disease.

The first thing i did was use google as my source of information. After much research this is what i discovered.

    1. The colon needs to be free from irritation in aid of healing or improving symptoms. So first thing i did was fast for a day, followed by a 7 day banana diet. Upto 7-8 bananas daily and banana as the only source of food. Just drink water.

    2. Secondly I started taking L-Glutamine supplement. Powder form is preferred to tablets as you can take upto 30-40 grams daily. Take as much as is comfortable. It is a generally safe supplement and the more in your system the better. Again with water. In tandem with the banana diet

    3. The most important in this process is the Vitamin E enema. Buy a disposable enema bulb at any pharmacy. It will be a small container about 200ml with a tube for insertion into the rectum. Buy vitamin-e liquid in any health store. Just make sure its d-alpha tocepherol and not d-alpha tocepherol acetate. Google Vitmain E enema for more information. I inserted a measurement of vitamin e liquid mixed with water every night into my rectum for 7 nights and retained the mixture.(Lying on your left side is beneficial and keeping the mixture in your colon for the night whilst sleeping is best) Including sleep I kept the mixture for around 12 hours in my intestine before having to release. This was whilst on the banana diet and taking the glutamine. Only other thing i took was a multiple vitamin, probiotic tablets and 3 cups of green tea daily with manuka honey for anti-inflammation.

After one week of this treatment my colitis was vastly improved and on the verge of no problems. On the eight day i ate normally again. I continued taking supplements and drinking the green tea for a short period.

Im not encouraging anyone to throw away their current medication. If its working keep doing it. This worked for me and should only be considered as an alternative to medicine if all else fails. I hope people listen to this, I have no ulterior motives and i am simply just trying to help. I am aware how draining this disease is and if this helps one person thats good enough for me. Please feel free to respond and ask questions. I will check this post daily for responses and queries
