The first step is usually to crack open a recipe book. Failing that, google it.

Here is a receipe for madeira cake:
350g self raising flour
275g caster sugar
275g soft marg
5 eggs
3 tablespoons milk

1) Line 8" round deep tim with double layer greaseproof
2) Sieve flour into bowl & add other ingredients
3) Beat together using low setting
4) spoon into tin
5) cook for 1.5 - 1.75 hours
6) leave in tin for 15 mins then remove
